Dark Lord: The Face of Evil That Actually Hits Pretty Hard
Overview
The Dark Lord entered the arena as the first major antagonist of the Empires & Puzzles lore to become a playable hero, arriving with the League of Villains event. As a Dark legendary Sorcerer (originally Wizard, but classes shift with costumes, though this review focuses on the base form which is a Wizard), he was designed to be the ultimate sniper. While he no longer holds the "highest stats in the game" title he once did, his unique mechanics of corrosive poison and buff duration reduction keep him mechanically interesting.

Hero Art & Visuals
The artwork here is iconic. It is the literal face of the enemy we stared at on the Season 1 map for years. The design is intimidating, featuring heavy dark armor, a glowing tome, and those signature horns. It captures the essence of a "final boss" perfectly. The color palette is strictly deep purples and ominous blacks, fitting for a lord of darkness. It is a very serious design compared to some of the more whimsical heroes released recently.

Hero Stats
Base Stats (No Costume Bonus)
| Level | Attack | Defense | Health | πͺPower |
|---|---|---|---|---|
4/80 | 801 | 749 | 1357 | 805 |
4/85lb1 | 863 | 808 | 1462 | 857 |
4/90lb2 | 988 | 924 | 1673 | 963 |
When we look at the Dark Lord's stats in the context of the modern game, the age shows. With a Limit Broken 2 power of roughly 963, he sits significantly behind modern heroes who regularly push past 1300 and even 1400 power. His attack stat of 988 (LB2) is serviceable but no longer elite. His defense and health are on the lower side by today's standards, making him somewhat squishy against modern heavy hitters. He relies heavily on killing the enemy before they can exploit his defensive stats.
Special Skill: Doomstrike

Doomstrike
- Deals 550% damage to the target.
- Reduces the duration of the target and nearby enemies buffs by 1 turn.
- The target and nearby enemies receive Corrosive Poison for 4 turns. The Corrosive Poison deals 144 Poison damage and lowers the target's mana generation by -13% each turn. Deals extra damage against heroes with Minions or a Mega Minion.
Doomstrike is a multi faceted skill that attempts to do three things at once: deal damage, control buffs, and control mana. The 550% damage at Fast speed is a solid sniper figure. It will still delete or severely maim older heroes and can put a dent in newer ones, though it lacks the raw one shot potential against modern tanks with massive overheal. The buff duration reduction is a subtle but powerful mechanic. Reducing nearby enemies' buffs by 1 turn can instantly strip 1 turn buffs (like some taunts or dodges depending on the caster) or simply force the enemy to recast sooner. The Corrosive Poison is the signature villain mechanic. It deals damage and, more importantly, stacks a mana generation debuff.
By the Numbers
- Mana Speed Analysis: At Fast speed, he requires 8 tiles to charge. With a Level 23 Mana Troop (or equivalent with emblem bonuses), he can reach the 7 tile breakpoint, which is critical for Dark stacks.
- Damage Calculation: 550% of his ~988 attack (LB2) is roughly 5434 raw damage value before defense calculation. This is a respectable hit but falls short of the 600%+ nukes we see today.
- Mana Control: The -13% mana generation stack is potent. Over 4 turns, this can significantly delay an enemy healer or reviver, often buying you the one turn you need to finish the match.
Family Bonus, Passives, Aether Power & Unique Abilities
The League of Villains family bonus is one of the more unique sustain mechanics in the game, essentially turning damage into health.
Family Bonus

Challenge Festival II - Villains
- Bonus for 1/2/3 Heroes:
- +10%/+30%/+50% chance to heal 15%/35%/70% of dealt damage when attacking an enemy.
- +40%/+80%/+120% more damage dealt against Minions and Mega Minions.
- The members of this family have additional perks in the Challenge Festival events.
The Villain family bonus provides a chance to heal for a percentage of the damage dealt. Since the Dark Lord hits hard as a sniper, this heal can be substantial. If you bring two or three Villains, the chance increases significantly (up to 50%), which can surprisingly keep him alive longer than his stats would suggest.
Aether Power

Attack Up
At the start of each battle, this Hero gets 20% attack for 6 turns
Attack Up is the standard offensive Aether power. It is simple and effective for a sniper. It boosts his direct damage and arguably helps the corrosive poison tick slightly harder if the initial hit is stronger (though DoT is usually fixed based on the skill description, the initial impact benefits).
Legacy & Modern Relevance
- Historical Context: Upon release, the Dark Lord was a monster. He was the premiere Dark sniper, replacing staples like Sartana. His stats were top tier, and the corrosive effects were a new, scary mechanic.
- Power Creep Analysis: The game has evolved rapidly. Stats that were once god like are now merely "okay." The 550% damage multiplier has held up reasonably well, but the base stats fueling it have not.
- Modern Viability Verdict: He is a Viable hero for war depth and tournaments, specifically Buff Booster (to remove enemy buffs) or Bloody Battle (where his poison shines). However, in top tier raiding or defense, he is too fragile and his damage doesn't quite clear the overhealed health pools of modern meta defenses.
Costume & Costume Bonus
This review focuses on the base Dark Lord, but we must address the elephant in the room: his Costume.
- The Upgrade: The Costume (Astronomer) is essentially the Dark Lord on steroids. It bumps the damage to 560%, but crucially, it increases the buff reduction to 2 turns.
- The Stats: The Costume provides a massive stat boost. Base Dark Lord sits around 963 Power (LB2), while the Costume version pushes well past 1400.
- Recommendation: If you have the Costume, you should almost certainly use the Costume version. The stats alone make it superior. The Base version is only preferable if you specifically need the Wizard class for a trial or need to counter a specific mechanic where the base version's specific poison numbers (though lower) are somehow relevant, which is rare.
Emblem Path Analysis
As a Wizard, the Dark Lord has access to the Jinx talent, which gives a chance to deal extra damage to enemies with buffs. This synergizes perfectly with his role as a sniper.
The Assassin (Attack Path)
- Path: Attack > Defense > Health
- Pros: Maximizes his 550% hit. Makes the most of the Jinx talent.
- Cons: Leaves him very fragile.
- Ref: Taking the attack nodes allows him to threaten kills on 4 star and older 5 star heroes.
The Survivalist (Defense Path)
- Path: Defense > Health > Attack
- Pros: Keeps him alive to fire his mana reduction more than once.
- Cons: His primary job is to kill. If he doesn't kill, he's just a mild annoyance.
Final Recommendation
For most players, the Assassin (Attack) path is recommended. You bring a sniper to snipe. If he dies, he dies, but if he fires, you want that target deleted.
Strengths
- Fast Mana Speed: 7 tile potential is always relevant.
- Buff Control: Reducing buff duration is a unique form of dispel that bypasses "undispellable" tags in some mechanical interactions (it doesn't remove them, just shortens them).
- Mana Suppression: The corrosive poison slows down the enemy counter attack.
- Self Sustain: The family bonus can provide unexpected burst healing.
Weaknesses
- Outdated Stats: His defense and HP are liabilities in the current meta.
- One Dimensional: He hits one target. In a meta of hit all monsters, single target heroes need to one shot to be worth the slot.
- Cleanse Vulnerability: His secondary effects (poison and mana slow) are cleansable.
Best Game Modes
- War Attack: A solid option for a 3rd or 4th war team, especially in a Purple stack against Yellow tanks.
- Titans: The high attack stat (with emblems) and mana slow can help survive against Holy titans, though there are better specialists.
- Tournaments: excellent in Bloody Battle where his poison damage cannot be healed.
Advanced Strategy & Team Compositions
The Dark Lord works best when he can finish what someone else started, or set up a kill for a teammate.
Sample Team Ideas
- The Purple Stack: Tiburtus (Defense Down) -> Dark Lord -> Kageburado. This sequence strips defense and delivers two heavy fast hits to delete a tank or flank.
- The Mana Control Team: Dark Lord + Proteus + Hel. While Proteus and Hel stop mana, Dark Lord ensures that even if they gain some, it's generated slowly.
Counters & Anti-Synergies
- Monks/Clerics: Can resist his mana ailments.
- Cleansers: Rigard, Vivica, or any modern cleanser will wipe his corrosive effects instantly.
- Minion Summoners: He deals extra damage to minions (per his updated card text in some versions, though primarily a feature of the costume/balance updates), but heavy minion spam can absorb his single target hit.
Advice for New Players
If you pulled the Dark Lord early, congratulations. He is a fantastic carry hero for Season map stages and early raiding. Focus on his attack. He will be your primary boss killer.
Advice for Veterans
Without the costume, the Dark Lord is likely a bench warmer for you. He might see play in the Tower events where you need deep rosters, or in Rush wars if you run out of Alfrikes. Do not use Alpha Aethers on the base version unless you also have the costume.
Community Corner: Hot Takes & History
The community reaction to the Dark Lord has been a rollercoaster.
- "C'mon. Itβs Dark Lord. Everybody wants him." - A sentiment from his release, highlighting the hype of finally playing the big bad.
- "Heβs just ridiculous now and needs a nerf." - A player reacting to his buff years ago, which is funny in hindsight given the current power levels.
- "Best Sniper in the game now. Even out damages Eiora and Fluffy." - This was the consensus after his balance update, showing he had a very high peak of popularity.
Final Thoughts
The Base Dark Lord is a shadow of his former self, but a shadow can still be dangerous. While he has been eclipsed by his own Costume and a myriad of newer heroes, the core design of a fast, mana slowing sniper remains sound. He is no longer the terrifying end boss of the game, but he is a respectable soldier in the League of Villains.
If you have the costume, he is a god. If you don't, he is a memory.
