Goseck: The King of Brinkmanship
Overview
Goseck is the embodiment of "high risk, high reward." Released back in 2022 as part of the Sanctuary of Gargoyles family, this Dark (Purple) Legendary hero introduced a terrifying mechanic: damage that scales based on how close he is to death. He is a Slow mana hero who wants to take a beating, survive with a sliver of health, and then wipe the entire enemy team off the map. He is the ultimate "Call an ambulance... but not for me!" hero.

Hero Art & Visuals
Goseck looks exactly like what you'd expect from a gargoyle who crawled out of a heavy metal album cover. He's got the classic stony skin, jagged wings, and a grin that says "I'm going to enjoy this way more than you are." The purple energy crackling around his weapon hints at the devastating power he holds back until the very last moment. Itβs a solid design that fits the "Insidious" moniker perfectlyβhe looks sturdy, but he's actually waiting for you to crack his shell.

Hero Stats
Base Stats (No Emblems)
| Level | Attack | Defense | Health | πͺPower |
|---|---|---|---|---|
4/80 | 824 | 801 | 1458 | 841 |
4/85lb1 | 888 | 863 | 1571 | 897 |
4/90lb2 | 1016 | 988 | 1798 | 1008 |
Letβs be brutally honest: Goseck is showing his age. With a maxed stats power of roughly 1008 (LB2), he is miles behind modern behemoths who are pushing 1500+ power.
- Attack: His base attack of ~824 (and even ~1016 at LB2) is now considered "Average 4-Star" level compared to modern 5-stars who regularly exceed 1300-1600 attack.
- Defense & Health: His durability is the real concern. 1798 HP at LB2 is shockingly low in an era where heroes walk around with 2800+ HP base.
This stat gap is critical because his entire gimmick revolves on him surviving at low health. With such a small HP pool, the line between "optimal damage" and "dead" is microscopic.
Special Skill: Revengeful Smite

Revengeful Smite
- Deals 350% damage to all enemies.
- The less HP the caster has, the more damage they deal up to 700%.
This skill is the reason Goseck exists. Itβs a simple, brutal equation:
- Base: 350% damage to all enemies.
- Max: 700% damage to all enemies.
Analysis: Back in 2022, 700% damage to all enemies was an "End Game" button. If Goseck fired at low HP, the match was over. Today, the math is less favorable.
- The Problem: Because his Attack stat is so low compared to modern heroes, his "700%" isn't as scary as it sounds.
- Goseck (LB2) Max Hit: 700% * 1016 Attack β 7,112 raw damage potential.
- Modern Slow Hero (e.g., Sizzleomatic): 475% * 1612 Attack β 7,657 raw damage potential.
The Harsh Truth: A modern Slow hero deals more damage to everyone at full health than Goseck deals at his absolute maximum potential while on death's door. Goseck needs to be dying to deal damage that modern heroes consider "standard." However, 350-700% is still a massive multiplier, and with enough Attack buffs (like from a Titan Banner or Ludwig), he can still wipe weaker teams.
By the Numbers
- Mana Speed: Slow (12 tiles).
- Damage Potential:
- Min (Full HP): 350% x 824 (Base Attack) = 2,884 raw damage (Pitiful).
- Max (1 HP): 700% x 824 = 5,768 raw damage.
- Modern Comparison: A modern fast sniper hits for ~8,000 raw damage to a single target. Goseck spreads that across 5, but the individual impact is now survivable for modern tanks.
- The "Sweet Spot": To beat a standard modern "Average" speed AOE hitter (who hits for ~5,700 raw), Goseck needs to be at roughly 1% HP. He practically needs to be dead to be competitive with today's meta.
Family Bonus, Passives, Aether Power & Unique Abilities
The Gargoyle family brings one of the most annoying defensive mechanics in the game: Stone Skin.
Family Bonus

Challenge - Gargoyle
- Bonus for 1/2/3/ Unique Heroes:
- Immune to Poison damage / Immune to Poison and Burn damage / Immune to Poison, Burn and Water damage
- The members of this family have additional perks in the Return to Sanctuary event.
The family bonus gives resistance to Poison (1 hero), Burn (2 heroes), and Water/Frost (3 heroes). Since Goseck is usually played solo or maybe with one other (like Kalo), the Poison immunity is a nice bonus but rarely a game-changer.
Passives
Passive Skills
- Gargoyle's StoneskinEvery time this Gargoyle casts a Special Skill, their Stoneskin hardens. The next 5 times they receive damage, it is dropped to 1. This effect can't be dispelled.
Gargoyleβs Stoneskin: This is his lifeline.
- Effect: After casting his special, his skin hardens. The next 5 times he takes damage, it is dropped to 1.
- Analysis: This is an incredible survival tool. It buys him time to recharge or survive a sniper shot that should have killed him. However, it only activates after he fires. Getting him to fire the first time is the hard part. Once the engine starts, he becomes very hard to kill with direct damage, though DoT (Damage over Time) bypasses this (unless it's Poison/Burn from the family bonus).
- Important Note: The passive was buffed post-release (it used to be fewer hits). It is undispellable.
Aether Power

Regen
At the start of each battle, this Hero regenerates 420 health over 6 turns.
Regen: This gives him a small heal over time at the start of battle. Verdict: Counter-Intuitive. Goseck wants to be at low health to deal damage. While regen helps him survive, it actively works against his damage ceiling. It's better than nothing, but "Bulwark" or "Special Boost" would have been far superior.
Legacy & Modern Relevance
- Historical Context: Upon release, Goseck was a terror in Rush Wars. He was the "Purple Alfrike" alternativeβif he fired, you lost. There were calls for nerfs because his damage ceiling was so high.
- Power Creep Analysis: Power creep has been unkind to Goseck. His stats have effectively halved his threat level. His "massive" damage is now just "good" damage, and his "tankiness" is non-existent without the Stone Skin active.
- Modern Viability Verdict: Niche / Bench.
- Standard Wars: He is too slow and too fragile. He will likely die before firing, or fire for weak damage.
- Rush Wars: This is his retirement home. In Very Fast wars, he can still be devastating because he fires before the enemy can chip him down, or he takes one big hit, survives, and retaliates instantly.
Emblem Path Analysis
You use Goseck for one thing: Nuclear Winter. Do not try to make him a tank; his stats are too low. Focus entirely on making his one hit count.
The Nuclear Option (Recommended)
- Path: Attack > Defense > Health
- Pros: Maximizes the multiplier. If he's going to hit for 700%, you want that base number as high as possible.
- Cons: He is incredibly squishy and might die to a stiff breeze.
Final Recommendation
Go full Attack. If he dies, he dies. But if he fires, you want it to hurt.
Strengths
- Rush War Specialist: In Very Fast modes, he is still a viable threat.
- Stone Skin: One of the best defensive passives in the game, making him surprisingly durable after he fires.
- Comeback King: Can turn a losing match (where your team is beaten down) into a win with a single cast.
Weaknesses
- Outdated Stats: His Attack and HP are severely behind the curve.
- Slow Speed: Without Rush rules or heavy mana support (Ludwig/Xnolphod), he is a sitting duck.
- Requires Damage: To be effective, he needs to be losing. A full HP Goseck is a wet noodle.
- Regen Aether: His LB1 ability actively lowers his damage potential.
Best Game Modes
- Rush Attack (Wars/Tournaments): The only place he truly shines today.
- PvE / Map Stages: Fun for clearing waves if you let him take some hits first.
Advanced Strategy & Team Compositions
The "Living on a Prayer" Team
You need to keep him alive but hurt.
- Taunt Support: Ludwig or Krampus. Ludwig is the best partner. He charges Goseck's mana and gives him Taunt protection, allowing Goseck to fire safely.
- Revivers: Mother North or Alberich. If Goseck dies, bring him back. Note: If he revives, he comes back with low HP, which is perfect for his special skill (instant high damage potential).
- The "Kalo" Bomb: Pair him with Kalo (Gargoyle 4-star). If Goseck dies, Kalo can cast Goseck's special. Since Kalo casts it based on Kalo's HP (or the stored spirit?), it's a classic combo.
Counters & Anti-Synergies
- Mana Control: Proteus, Hel, or any mana cutter stops him cold.
- Healers: Overhealing him reduces his damage. Avoid pairing him with heavy overhealers if you want max damage, though survival is usually more important.
- Executioners: Heroes like Tyr or anyone who bypasses defenses can snipe him before he drops into the "sweet spot."
Advice for New Players
If you pull Goseck early, he is a great "boss killer" for map stages. Let the boss hit him, then fire back. For raids, hide him in the corner and hope he survives. He will carry you through Gold and Platinum arenas simply by pure damage.
Advice for Veterans
He is a luxury toy for Rush Wars. Do not LB2 him unless you have resources to burn and a deep love for the Gargoyles. There are far better Purple projects (like anyone from the Construct, Astral, or Goblin families) who offer more utility and damage without the condition of "almost dying."
Community Corner: Hot Takes & History
- βGoseck will be a very interesting tank... he will be a beast in VF.β - This prediction held true for about a year. Now, he's a liability as a tank because he dies to tile damage too fast.
- βI do wish he was still a fighter... imagine if he revived at 1 HP and fired.β - The community correctly identified that the Fighter class (beta version) would have been broken. Barbarian was the "nerf" to keep him sane.
- βHe fired after receiving only 65 points of damage and he still dealt over 700 points of damage to my entire team.β - A reminder of how scary he was in 2022. Today, 700 damage is a scratch.
Final Thoughts
Goseck is a relic of a different era. He reminds us of a time when 700% damage was a game-ending number. Today, he is a specialized tool for Rush Wars and a fun "what if" hero for seeing big numbers on the screen. He is the glass cannon that has become more glass than cannon. If you have him, dress him up for Rush, but don't expect him to carry your team against the modern gods of Empires & Puzzles.
Verdict: A situational nuke that has gathered a bit too much dust. Keep for Rush, bench for the rest.

"He traded his feral dignity for a leather jacket and a juice box, but Costumed Roc brings something his base form never could: lethal utility. With defense down and a dispel, he's a serious upgrade, but is he enough to keep up with the gods and monsters of 2026? We sip on the details."
