Lemminkäinen: The "Undying" Champion of Bench-Warming
Overview
Meet Lemminkäinen, the 4-star Fire Barbarian from the Legends of Kalevala event. Released way back in the summer of 2022, he entered the game with a majestic beard, a flaming sword, and the promise of being an "Undying Champion." In reality, he's mostly known for refusing to die... in your roster, because you can't bring yourself to feed him away despite never using him.
This review focuses on his base version. While he does have a costume (which we'll touch on), the original flavor of Lemminkäinen is what many players first encountered—and promptly forgot about.

Hero Art & Visuals
Visually, Lemminkäinen is actually pretty cool. He's got that rugged, "I wrestle bears for breakfast" look, wielding a sword that is literally on fire. The art style fits the Kalevala theme perfectly—stoic, mythological, and slightly intense. It's just a shame his in-game performance doesn't quite match the ferocity of his portrait. He looks like he's about to cleave a mountain in two; instead, he mostly just annoys the mountain with a bit of heat rash.

Hero Stats
Base Stats (No Costume Bonus)
| Level | Attack | Defense | Health | 💪Power |
|---|---|---|---|---|
4/70 | 646 | 616 | 1421 | 682 |
4/75lb1 | 701 | 669 | 1544 | 733 |
4/80lb2 | 813 | 776 | 1790 | 837 |
Let's rip the band-aid off: Lemminkäinen's stats are archaic. With 646 Attack and 616 Defense, he is woefully behind the curve. Modern 4-star heroes like Hotspin or Breca are sitting at nearly 800+ in these stats. Even with Limit Breaks, he struggles to compete with the raw numbers of newer "Construct" or "Opera" heroes. He is a relic of a simpler time, a time before 4-star heroes had 5-star stats.
Special Skill: Flaming Sword

Flaming Sword
- Deals 285% damage to the target and minor damage to nearby enemies.
- The target and nearby enemies receive 196 Burn damage over 4 turns. Against Ice characters, this status effect becomes uncleansable and lasts 2 turns longer.
Flaming Sword is a classic "Hit-3" skill, but with a disappointing twist: "minor damage to nearby enemies."
- Direct Damage: 285% to the target is... okay. It's not a snipe, but it's a solid hit. However, the splash damage to neighbors is negligible.
- The Burn: 196 Burn damage over 4 turns is roughly 49 damage per turn. In the current era of boosted health and massive healing, this is barely a scratch.
- The Gimmick: Against Ice characters, the burn becomes uncleansable and lasts 2 turns longer. This is his one party trick. It sounds useful on paper, but practically? You aren't bringing a red 4-star to fight blue tanks in high-level wars.
By the Numbers
- Mana Speed: Average. He needs 10 tiles to fire. In a world of Fast and Very Fast threats, this feels sluggish for what he offers.
- Damage Potential: 285% of 646 Attack is roughly ~1841 raw damage value (before defense). For context, modern 4-star hitters are outputting significantly more to all targets or hitting much harder on a single target.
- Burn Damage: 196 total over 4 turns. Compare this to modern DoT heroes who can deal 500+ or apply stacks. It's weak sauce.
Family Bonus, Passives, Aether Power & Unique Abilities
The Kalevala family offers some unique defensive perks, but are they enough to save him?
Family Bonus

Monthly Event - Kalevala
- Bonus for 1/2/3 Unique Heroes:
- Receive -10%/-25%/-40% less damage from the Special Skills of the stronger element.
- The members of this family have additional perks in the Kalevala event.
Reducing damage from the stronger element (Ice, in his case) is actually a very strong defensive bonus. It makes him deceptively tanky against blue snipers. However, since you rarely want to bring him against blue teams, this bonus is often wasted on offense.
Passives
Passive Skills
Power of SisuWhen this character starts a turn with low health for the first time during a battle, they recover 15% health and receive 15% mana.
Power of Sisu: Recovering health and mana when dropping to low health is a fantastic passive. It can clutch a match by letting him fire one last time. It fits his theme of "Undying Champion" perfectly.
Aether Power

Dodge
At the start of each battle, this Hero gets 20% chance to dodge Special Skills that deal damage for 6 turns.
Dodge is a top-tier Aether Power. It adds another layer of survivability to a hero who is already scrappy thanks to his passive. If he were a tank, this would be amazing. As a flank or wing, it's just "nice to have."
Legacy & Modern Relevance
- Historical Context: Upon release, Lemminkäinen was considered "average" at best. He lived in the shadow of stronger event heroes and never really had a meta moment.
- Power Creep Analysis: He has been power-crept into oblivion. His stats are low, his damage is low, and his DoT is low.
- Modern Viability: Low. He is not viable in 5-star wars or competitive raids. His only home is in very specific 4-star tournaments (like Buff Booster or Bloody Battle) where his burn might matter, or for newer players with shallow rosters.
Costume & Costume Bonus
Base vs. Costume: The costume (Swan) changes his class to Fighter (revive!) and boosts his damage slightly to 300% to the target. However, it lowers the total burn damage to 176.
- Recommendation: Generally, the Costume is better solely for the Fighter class talent (Revive) and the stat bonus. The skill difference is negligible, but reviving is always better than bleeding. Use the costume version if you have it, but keep the base version for the Barbarian trials if needed.
Emblem Path Analysis
If you insist on using him (maybe you love gingers?), here is how to build him.
The Glass Torch (Attack Path)
- Path: Attack > Defense > Health
- Pros: Maximizes his mediocre skill damage and burn tick (since DoT scales with attack).
- Cons: He remains squishy despite his defensive passive.
The Survivalist (Defense Path)
- Path: Defense > Health > Attack
- Pros: Keeps him alive longer to utilize his Sisu passive and keep the burn going.
- Cons: His hit becomes even more like a wet noodle.
Final Recommendation
Go Attack. If you are using a damage dealer, make them deal damage. If he dies, well, that's what the Sisu passive is for.
Strengths
- Survivability: Between the Family Bonus (vs Ice), Sisu Passive (Heal/Mana), and Barbarian Bleed, he is surprisingly hard to kill.
- Uncleansable Burn: Niche, but effective against Blue bosses or tanks in PvE.
- Passive: The Sisu passive is genuinely excellent.
Weaknesses
- Low Damage: "Minor damage to nearby" is the kiss of death for an Average speed hero.
- Low Stats: He needs Limit Breaks just to match modern un-emblemed 4-stars.
- Average Speed: Too slow for the impact he delivers.
- Niche Utility: His "anti-Ice" gimmick is counter-intuitive for a Red hero.
Best Game Modes
- 4-Star Rush Tournaments: His speed becomes Fast, making his burn and hit more oppressive.
- Bloody Battle: Burn damage is valuable when healing is disabled.
- Faction Quests: He fills a slot if you need a Red hitter.
Advanced Strategy & Team Compositions
Don't build a team around him. Slot him in as a support attacker.
Sample Team Ideas
- The "Burn Baby Burn" 4-Star Team:
- Colen (C) - Boldtusk - Lemminkäinen
- Why: Stack burns. Boldtusk boosts attack, Colen roasts everyone, and Lemminkäinen finishes off a straggler.
Counters & Anti-Synergies
- Cleanse: Any cleanser (Rigard, etc.) wipes his burn instantly unless they are Blue (which they usually aren't).
- Minion Summoners: He hits 3, but weak splash damage struggles to clear minions.
Advice for New Players
If Lemminkäinen is one of your first 4-star reds, he is serviceable. Level him to 3/60 and see if you get Boldtusk, Gormek, or Colen. If not, take him to 4/70. Do not Limit Break him unless you have absolutely no other options.
Advice for Veterans
He is food. Or a museum piece. Unless you are a collector or play in a very restrictive 4-star league, you have better options. His costume bonus is nice if you have the costume, but the base hero alone is not worth the mats.
Community Corner: Hot Takes & History
The community has never been kind to our fiery friend.
- "I feel that lemminkainen’s only purpose right now is to be paired with mielekki so that she gets more fire defence." - A forum user effectively calling him a glorified meat shield.
- "When 5 year old colen does a better job than this 2022 guy" - Ouch. But true.
- "He looks cool… yeah that’s about it." - The general consensus. Great art, sad stats.
Final Thoughts
Lemminkäinen is a hero suffering from an identity crisis. He wants to be an anti-Ice slayer, but he's a Fire hero. He wants to be a damage dealer, but he hits like a wet towel. He wants to be undying, but he mostly just takes up space on your bench. If you have him, admire his beard, maybe use him in a Rush tournament, and then go back to leveling your Toon Colen.
Verdict: D-Tier. Only usable if you have literally nothing else.
