Lu Bu: The Wrathful Warlord Who Forgot His Gym Membership?
Overview
Lu Bu, the "Wrathful Warlord," charged into Empires & Puzzles back in March 2022 during the War of Three Kingdoms event. As a Slow mana Dark (Purple) hero, he was designed to be a devastating finisherβa hero who, if allowed to fire, would cripple the enemy team with heavy damage and annoying parasites. Fast forward to today, and while his mechanics remain unique, the battlefield has become much faster and more lethal. This review focuses on the base version of Lu Bu, examining if there's any reason to field him over his shiny new Tiger Costume. Spoiler: It's a tough sell, but let's see if the old warrior has any fight left in him.

Hero Art & Visuals
The original Lu Bu artwork screams "classic fantasy general." Heβs decked out in spiky, impractical dark armor that looks like it would snag on every doorframe, wielding a polearm that compensates for... something. Itβs a solid, intimidating design that fits his lore as an unstoppable warrior. Compared to his costume, which some players have uncharitably described as "Lu Bu after eating a few too many pizzas," the base art is arguably sleeker and more menacing. At least he looked fit back then!

Hero Stats
Base Stats (No Costume Bonus)
| Level | Attack | Defense | Health | πͺPower |
|---|---|---|---|---|
4/80 | 788 | 801 | 1505 | 835 |
4/85lb1 | 850 | 863 | 1622 | 891 |
4/90lb2 | 972 | 988 | 1856 | 1001 |
Here is the hard truth: Lu Bu's base stats are severely outdated. With a base power of 835 and stats hovering around 788 Attack and 801 Defense, he is miles behind modern heroes who regularly break the 1000 mark raw. In the current meta, where "glass cannons" have more defense than his "tank" stats, he struggles to survive long enough to charge his Slow mana. Without Limit Breaking and heavy emblems, he is essentially paper-mache in legendary wars.
Special Skill: Disrupting Charge

Disrupting Charge
- Deals 330% damage to all enemies.
- Summons a Mercenary Fiend for all enemies. The Fiend damages its target with 56% attack every turn.
- The Mercenary Fiend absorbs healing. It disappears after absorbing a healing amount equal to 38% of its target's max health.
- When summoned, the Mercenary Fiend causes its target to be immune to new buffs. The effect lasts as long as the target has Mercenary Fiend. This effect can't be cleansed.
Disrupting Charge does three things: it hits everyone, it summons a Fiend, and that Fiend blocks buffs.
- The Damage: 330% damage to all enemies is decent, but at Slow speed, it's no longer the "nuke" it used to be. Modern Fast heroes often hit harder.
- The Fiend: The Mercenary Fiend absorbs 38% of max health. This is on the lower end for modern fiends, meaning a dedicated healer can cleanse it relatively easily.
- The Utility: Buff Immunity is the crown jewel. As long as the Fiend is alive, the target cannot receive any new buffs. This is incredibly powerful against heavy buffers like Aramis, Hathor, or taunters. However, the condition "as long as the target has the Fiend" is its Achilles' heel; if they heal the fiend away, the immunity vanishes instantly.
By the Numbers
- Mana Speed: Slow (12 tiles). With the Kingdom family bonus and a Level 29 Mana troop (or Magic/Styx/Cyclops), you can shave this down, but he will rarely keep pace with the 6-tile rushers of today.
- Damage Potential: With ~900 Attack (emblemed), a 330% hit deals ~3000 raw damage distributed across the team. It's a "softener," not a wiper, unless you've heavily debuffed the enemy first.
- Fiend Impact: The fiend attacks for ~56% damage per turn. It's a nuisance, not a death sentence. The real value is blocking that +Defense or Taunt buff that would otherwise save the enemy team.
Family Bonus, Passives, Aether Power & Unique Abilities
The Kingdom Family is one of the more interesting families, though it relies heavily on synergy.
Family Bonus

Three Kingdoms - Kingdoms
- Bonus for 1/2/3 Unique Heroes:
- 2% / 4% / 6% mana each time a Minion is summoned for the Hero.
- 3% / 5% / 7% heal each time a Minion is summoned for the Hero.
- Morale Boost:
- Heroes belonging to this family as well as heroes fighting alongside with them receive additional perks in War of the Three Kingdoms:
- +10% attack, + 3% defense, +7% health
The Kingdom bonus gives mana and healing whenever a minion is summoned for the hero. Lu Bu himself does not summon minions for his team; he summons fiends for the enemy. This means he gets zero value from his own family bonus unless paired with allies like Diaochan, Yao, or Liu Bei who summon minions for him. This is a massive design anti-synergy for a standalone hero.
Passives
No passives found
Base Lu Bu has no passives. In an era where new heroes come with three paragraphs of passive abilities (immune to mana cut, start with mana, make you coffee), this emptiness is stark.
Aether Power

Fiend Resist
At the start of each battle, this Hero is immune to new Fiends for 6 turns.
Fiend Resist allows him to resist incoming fiends for the start of the battle. It's a decent defensive perk given the prevalence of Waterpipe and other fiend summoners, but it doesn't help him win the matchβit just helps him not lose quite as fast.
Legacy & Modern Relevance
- Historical Context: Upon release, Lu Bu was a monster in Rush Attack tournaments and wars. His ability to shut down buffs permanently (until healed) made him a nightmare for teams relying on healers who grant buffs (like Garnet or Professor Lidenbrock).
- Power Creep Analysis: He has been crept hard. His damage is average, his speed is painful, and his stats are relics of the past.
- Modern Viability Verdict: Bench. Outside of very specific Rush Attack scenarios or as a niche counter in depths of war, there is almost no reason to run base Lu Bu if you have access to modern heroes. His Costume is superior in every conceivable metric.
Costume & Costume Bonus
This is a massacre. The Costume (Wrathful Tiger Warlord) is a straight upgrade:
- Class: Changes from Barbarian (Bleed) to Fighter (Revive). Fighter is infinitely better for a Slow hero, giving him a chance to fire even after being sniped.
- Stats: The costume grants a massive stat boost, bringing him in line with modern standards.
- Fiends: The Costume's fiends are beefier (absorb 50% vs 38%) and hit harder.
- Recommendation: If you have the costume, never look back. The base version has no unique utility that warrants using it over the costume.
Emblem Path Analysis
If you are forced to use the base version (perhaps for a Barbarian class quest), you need him to survive long enough to fire.
The Survivor (Recommended)
- Path: Defense > Health > Attack
- Pros: Keeps him alive. Slow heroes deal zero damage if they are dead before 12 tiles.
- Cons: His hit will feel like a wet noodle.
The Glass Cannon
- Path: Attack > Defense > Health
- Pros: Maximizes the AoE damage if he ever fires.
- Cons: He will likely die to a stiff breeze before charging.
Final Recommendation
Go Defense/Health. His primary utility is the Buff Block from the fiends; the direct damage is secondary.
Strengths
- Buff Immunity: One of the few sources of "permanent" buff immunity (tied to the fiend).
- Universal Hit: hits all enemies, ensuring fiend coverage.
- Rush War Specialist: devastating in Very Fast mana modes.
Weaknesses
- Slow Speed: A death sentence in modern raids.
- Anti-Synergistic Family Bonus: Needs teammates to activate his own family bonus.
- Outdated Stats: Severely fragile by 2026 standards.
- Cleansable: Healers remove the fiends, and thus the buff immunity.
Best Game Modes
- Rush Attack Wars/Tournaments: This is his home. At Very Fast speed, he becomes a top-tier threat.
- Tower Events: The permanent buff block (until healed) is excellent against bosses with annoying buffs.
Advanced Strategy & Team Compositions
- Minion Support: Pair him with Liu Bei or Diaochan. They provide the minions that trigger his Kingdom Family mana generation, effectively speeding him up.
- The "No-Heal" Zone: Pair him with Viscaro or anti-healing heroes. If the enemy cannot heal, they cannot remove the fiends, and thus cannot buff.
Advice for New Players
If Lu Bu is your first 5-star, congratulations! He will carry you through map stages and lower-tier raids purely by brute force. Don't worry about his speed early on; just focus on keeping him alive.
Advice for Veterans
He is a Soul Exchange candidate unless you have the Costume. If you have the Costume, you level the Costume. There is no strategic reason to use the base form in high-level play.
Community Corner: Hot Takes & History
- "Being slow and dark, this guy is the fusion of Viscaro (fiends) and Chakky (buff immunity)." - An optimistic early comparison.
- "The hero card has been updated with January balance update... I dunno why this one has that bad eval. Even pre-buff he was not that bad." - Players consistently defended his utility despite the "Slow" tag.
- "Lu Bu looks like he ate a few pizzas before putting on this costume." - A savage burn regarding his costume's art, making the base form the winner in the fashion show, at least.
Final Thoughts
Lu Bu is a legend of the Three Kingdoms, but in Empires & Puzzles, heβs a legend past his prime. The base version is a relicβa slow, lumbering giant in a world of ninja sprinters. While his Buff Immunity is a cool trick, itβs not enough to save him from the retirement home. Use him if you must, but pray for the Costume.
Verdict: A Rush War specialist who warms the bench the rest of the month.
