Numbskull: The Zombie Whoβs Dying to Meet You (Eventually)
Overview
Numbskull is a 4-star Nature (Green) hero from the Abyss Hunter (Monster Hunter) family. Released during the Covenant Summon era in mid-2023, he represents a unique take on the "slow but deadly" archetype. As a fighter class hero, he has the annoying habit of reviving when you think he's finally down. His primary role is a mix of AoE damage dealer and a "reverse" minion summonerβwhere you actually want his minions to die.
Heβs a clumsy skeleton with a bucket on his head, which pretty much sums up how it feels to use him at Slow mana speed in a Fast mana world.

Hero Art & Visuals
The artwork is fantastic, leaning heavily into the "comical undead" trope. With a metal bucket functioning as a helmet and a haphazardly assembled set of armor, Numbskull looks like he geared up in a dark kitchen. The visual design perfectly captures his nameβhe looks like heβs trying his best, even if his best involves stumbling into battle 3 turns late.

Hero Stats
Base Stats (No Emblems)
| Level | Attack | Defense | Health | πͺPower |
|---|---|---|---|---|
4/70 | 671 | 667 | 1289 | 687 |
4/75lb1 | 729 | 725 | 1401 | 739 |
4/80lb2 | 845 | 840 | 1624 | 843 |
When we look at Numbskull's stats (671 Attack, 667 Defense, 1289 HP), it's a sobering reality check. Compared to modern 4-star powerhouses like Hotspin (816 Attack) or Buddy C1 (855 Defense), Numbskull is significantly underpowered.
- Attack: His attack stat is well below the 750+ standard we see in 2025/2026.
- Bulk: With roughly 1300 HP and sub-700 defense, he is incredibly fragile. In today's meta, 4-star heroes often push 1500+ HP out of the box. Numbskull will struggle to survive long enough to fire his Slow special without heavy emblem and limit break investment.
Special Skill: Cracked Skull Strike

Cracked Skull Strike
- Deals 150% damage to all enemies.
- Summons a Bone Skull Minion for each ally with 12% HP and 20% attack inherited from the caster.
- When the Bone Skull Minion is destroyed, it deals 85 damage to all enemies.
The skill "Cracked Skull Strike" is a bit of a mixed bag of bones.
- Direct Damage: 150% damage to all enemies. This was buffed from an abysmal 100% in early 2024. While 150% is better, it's still low for a Slow speed hero (compare to Colen's 180% or newer heroes hitting 200%+).
- The Minion Gimmick: He summons Bone Skull Minions for all allies. These minions are relatively weak (12% HP), but that's the point. When they are destroyed, they deal 85 damage to ALL enemies.
- The Payoff: If an enemy uses an AoE attack that wipes out all 5 of your minions, the enemy team takes 85 x 5 = 425 fixed damage each. That is a massive retribution strike.
Analysis: This is a "punishment" mechanic. It forces the enemy to think twice about using AoE attacks. However, because he is Slow, the battle is often already decided by the time he summons them.
By the Numbers
Let's break down the damage potential of a single cast:
- Mana Speed: Slow (12 tiles). This is his biggest hurdle.
- Direct Damage: 150% x 671 Attack β ~200-250 damage per enemy (highly dependent on enemy defense, likely lower against modern tanks).
- Passive DoT: The Hunter's Mark deals 150 damage over 3 turns.
- Minion Bomb: If 5 minions die, that's 425 damage to every enemy.
Total Potential Damage Sequence: If everything goes perfectly (Cast -> Passive applied -> All minions wiped next turn): ~225 (Hit) + 150 (DoT) + 425 (Minion Bomb) = ~800 damage to all enemies.
Verdict: 800 damage to all enemies is 5-star level damage. The problem is the setup required to achieve it.
Family Bonus, Passives, Aether Power & Unique Abilities
The Abyss Hunter family and his innate passives are actually quite strong and help patch up his kit.
Family Bonus

Monster Island - Abyss Hunters
- Bonus for 2/3/4/5 Heroes:
- +5%/+10%/+15%/+20% defense.
- Event Bonus: Heroes belonging to the Abyss Hunter family receive the following perks on Monster Island:
- * +40% attack, +40% defense, +40% health
The Abyss Hunter family bonus generally provides benefits when multiple family members are present or during the Monster Island event. However, for general PvP, you are mostly looking at his Passives.
Passives
Passive Skills
- Hunter's SenseWhen this character casts their Special Skill, they transfer the newest cleansable status ailment from themself to the target. If the Special Skill cannot target an enemy, a random enemy is chosen instead. If this character has no cleansable status ailments, they recover 12% health.
Damage over Time on SpecialWhen this character casts their Special Skill, they give a Hunter's Mark on a random enemy. The target receives 150 damage over 3 turns. If a target already has this effect, the duration will be refreshed and the damage will be increased by 150, up to 1500 damage in total.
Numbskull has two excellent passives:
- Hunter's Mark (DoT): Applies a 150 damage DoT on cast. This is free damage and helps wear down enemies. It scales up if reapplied, but at Slow speed, you likely won't stack it often.
- Hunter's Sense (Cleanse/Heal): This is amazing utility. He transfers the newest cleansable ailment from himself to the target. If he has no ailments, he heals 8%. This makes him surprisingly resilient against status-heavy teams, provided he can actually fire.
Aether Power

Regen
At the start of each battle, this Hero regenerates 420 health over 6 turns.
Regen: This fits his survival needs. Keeping him alive until he fires is the main goal, so passive healing is welcomed, though "Defense Up" or "Damage Reduction" might have been better for his low defense stat.
Legacy & Modern Relevance
- Historical Context: Upon release, Numbskull was widely mocked for his 100% damage output. He was considered one of the worst 4-star heroes, a "joke" pull.
- Power Creep: The 2024 buff helped, but stats have moved on. With new 4-star heroes having 800+ Attack and Fast speeds, Numbskull's 671 Attack and Slow speed feel archaic.
- Modern Viability: He is not viable in standard raids or wars. He is simply too slow and too squishy. His only niche is 4-Star Rush Attack Tournaments, where his speed becomes Very Fast. In that specific mode, his high total damage potential (Direct + Minion Bomb) can be devastating.
Costume & Costume Bonus
Numbskull currently does not have a costume. If one is released, it will desperately need to address his base stats and mana speed to make him relevant outside of Rush modes.
Emblem Path Analysis
You need to keep this zombie standing.
The Meat Shield (Recommended)
- Path: Defense > Health > Attack
- Pros: maximizing Defense and Health gives him the best chance to survive 12 tiles of charging.
- Cons: Lowers his direct damage and minion attack slightly.
The Hard Hitter
- Path: Attack > Defense > Health
- Pros: Maximizes the 150% hit and increases minion "meat" slightly (minion HP is % of caster Max HP, so Health path is actually better for minions too).
- Cons: He will die before firing.
Final Recommendation
Go full Defense/Health. His damage comes from fixed sources (Minion explosion is fixed damage, DoT is fixed damage) or low multipliers. Keeping him alive is paramount.
Strengths
- Rush Attack King: In Very Fast modes, he can fire quickly, creating a minion minefield.
- Minion "Trap": Punishes enemies for using AoE attacks.
- Utility: Built-in cleanse (transfer) and self-heal via passive.
- Fixed Damage: Minion explosion damage bypasses defense buffs.
Weaknesses
- Painfully Slow: 12 tiles is an eternity in modern E&P.
- Outdated Stats: He melts under fire from modern snipers.
- Dependent on Enemy Actions: If the enemy ignores the minions or snipes heroes individually, his main damage source (minion explosion) triggers too slowly or not at all.
- Weak Initial Hit: 150% is barely a scratch on boosted-health teams.
Best Game Modes
- Rush Attack Tournaments (4):* His absolute best home.
- Bloody Battle: Minions provide pseudo-healing (meat shields), and his damage output is respectable.
- Map Stages: Good for clearing waves of weak monsters.
Advanced Strategy & Team Compositions
Sample Team Ideas
- The "Stop Hitting Yourself" Team:
- Cyprian/Boril (Riposte) + Numbskull + Ferant: Surround Numbskull with counter-attackers. If the enemy uses AoE, they take Riposte damage AND trigger the minion bombs.
- The Rush Defense:
- Franz - Numbskull - Kalo: In Rush, Franz increases damage taken, Numbskull softens them up/mines the field, and Kalo cleans up.
Counters & Anti-Synergies
- Minion Removers (Grimble, Captain of Diamonds, Gobbler): They destroy minions instantly. While this does trigger the damage, it removes the meat shield protection immediately.
- Lunar/Passive Disablers: Heroes that block passives or minion effects can neuter him.
- Silencers/Mana Controllers: He is slow; if you stop his mana, he is just a tile on the board.
Advice for New Players
If you pull him early, he can be a decent "tank" for your 4-star team simply because his minions add survivability. However, do not prioritize him over fast healers or snipers. He is a luxury toy, not a foundational hero.
Advice for Veterans
He is a "Rush Tournament Only" hero. Do not Limit Break him unless you are specifically trying to compete for top 1% in 4-star Rush. Even then, there are better options (like Franz, Li Xiu Costume, Colen Costume). He is safe to leave at 4/70 or bench.
Community Corner: Hot Takes & History
The community has not been kind to Numbskull.
- "This manβs very existence is a joke."
- "A very fast hero at slow speed. What on earth were the Devs thinking???"
- "I would consider trashing Numby, but then I remember what the game did to Ingolf." (Hoping for a buff).
- Even after his buff, the sentiment remains: "Still weak at slow speed."
The general consensus is that his artwork is top-tier ("Subjective representation of a P2P zombie"), but his gameplay loop is frustratingly sluggish.
Final Thoughts
Numbskull is a hero with a fun concept trapped in a weak body. The idea of "exploding minions" is great, but putting it on a Slow hero with 2023 stats makes him a hard sell. Heβs like a zombie movie extraβhe shuffles around, groans a bit, and usually gets taken out before the main action starts.
Verdict: Keep one for Rush Tournaments if you lack better green options. Otherwise, he mostly serves as a reminder to wear a helmet.
