Peppermint: The Grumpy Gnome Alchemist β Poisonous Potions and Underwhelming Explosions
Overview
Peppermint, the grumpy Gnome Alchemist, joined the Empires & Puzzles roster during the 2022 Santa's Challenge. A 5-star Dark (Purple) hero from the Winter family, she was designed as a "balanced" AoE attacker with a mix of direct damage, minions, and damage over time (DoT). Unfortunately, in the high-octane world of modern E&P, "balanced" often translates to "benchwarmer." While her visual design suggests a potent brew of magic, her actual impact on the battlefield often feels more like a light spritz of eau de toilette than a lethal chemical weapon.

Hero Art & Visuals
Peppermint's art is a delightful departure from the usual "fierce warrior" aesthetic. She looks like she hasn't slept in three weeks and hates every second of being awake. The grumpy expression, the strange insect-like contraptions on her hat, and the glowing censer (which presumably contains the "Putrid Perfume") give her a unique, albeit slightly gross, charm. She embodies the chaotic energy of a workshop elf whoβs tired of making toys and has switched to brewing hazardous chemicals. It's a fun design that perfectly captures her lore as a gnome alchemist, even if her in-game performance doesn't quite match her menacing glare.

Hero Stats
Base Stats (No Emblems)
| Level | Attack | Defense | Health | πͺPower |
|---|---|---|---|---|
4/80 | 824 | 836 | 1460 | 851 |
4/85lb1 | 888 | 901 | 1573 | 908 |
4/90lb2 | 1016 | 1031 | 1800 | 1021 |
Let's be blunt: Peppermint's stats are a relic of the past. With a base Power of 851 and stats hovering around 824 Attack and 836 Defense, she is drastically behind the curve. Modern heroes (released in late 2025/2026) are boasting base stats pushing 1300+ in Attack and Defense with nearly double her health pool. Even with a second Limit Break (LB2), her stats barely scrape the 1000 mark, meaning a fully maxed Peppermint today has lower stats than a naked, non-emblemed modern hero. This stat deficit makes her incredibly fragile and her damage output laughable against modern defenses.
Special Skill: Putrid Perfume

Putrid Perfume
- Deals 250% damage to all enemies.
- Summons an Elf Minion for each ally with 10% HP and 10% attack inherited from the caster.
- All enemies receive 280 Poison damage, and an increase of 16 damage per each Dark shield on the board over 4 turns up to 408 damage.
Analysis: "Putrid Perfume" tries to do three things at once and excels at none of them.
- Direct Damage: 250% damage to all enemies is simply too low for an Average speed hero in the current meta. We have Fast heroes hitting harder, and modern Slow/Average heroes are often clearing the board with 450%+ damage.
- Minions: The Elf Minions inherit 10% HP and 10% Attack. In an era of Mega Minions and minions with 20-30% inheritance, these elves are little more than paper tissue. They die to a stiff breeze and provide negligible protection.
- Poison DoT: The poison damage scales with Dark shields on the board, capping at 408 over 4 turns. While the mechanic is interesting, the damage cap is pitifully low. 408 damage over 4 turns is roughly 100 damage per turn. Modern DoT heroes deal 500-1000+ damage straight out of the gate without needing board conditions.
By the Numbers
- Mana Speed: Average (10 tiles). This is too slow for the impact she provides.
- Damage Potential:
- Base: 250% to 5 enemies = 1250% total damage output.
- With modern stats (Attack ~824 vs Defense ~1500), this 250% will likely result in "1 damage" scratches against top-tier tanks.
- Healing/Support: The 10% HP minion on a hero with ~1500 HP (LB1) provides roughly 150 HP buffer. This is easily cleared by a single slash attack or incidental AoE damage.
- Poison Scaling:
- Base: 280 damage / 4 turns = 70 damage/turn.
- Max (requires 8+ Dark shields): 408 damage / 4 turns = 102 damage/turn.
- Verdict: The scaling reward is not worth the effort of saving tiles.
Family Bonus, Passives, Aether Power & Unique Abilities
Family Bonus

Monthly Event - Winter
- Bonus for 2/3 Unique Heroes:
- +2%/ +3% health for Minions inherited from their summoner.
- +5%/+10% attack for Minions inherited from their summoner.
- The members of this family have additional perks in the Santa's Challenge event.
The Winter Family bonus boosts the health and attack of minions. Since Peppermint summons minions for everyone, she does benefit from this if you run a full Christmas team (e.g., with Mother North or Krampus). However, a 2-3% boost to already weak minions is lipstick on a pig.
Passives
No passives found
Peppermint suffers from "Old Hero Syndrome"βshe has zero innate passive skills outside of the family bonus. No mana boost on buff, no healing on ailment, nothing.
Aether Power

Special Boost
At the start of each battle, this Hero's Special Skill deals an additional 30% damage for 6 turns.
Special Boost: This increases the damage of her special skill when Limit Broken. While damage is what she needs, a percentage boost on a low base percentage (250%) yields diminishing returns compared to boosting a high-damage sniper.
Legacy & Modern Relevance
- Historical Context: Even upon her release in December 2022, Peppermint was met with a lukewarm reception. She was considered "balanced" in a time when players were looking for the next meta-breaker. She never truly had a moment in the spotlight, overshadowed by her family members like Mother North, Krampus, and even Pengi.
- Power Creep Analysis: The game has sprinted past Peppermint. Her damage is negligible, her minions are irrelevant, and her DoT is cleansable and weak.
- Modern Viability Verdict: Bench. There is almost no scenario in competitive play where Peppermint is the optimal choice. She sits firmly in the "Soul Exchange fodder" category for veteran players.
Costume & Costume Bonus
Note: At the time of this review, Peppermint does not have a costume. This section highlights a major disadvantage: without a costume, she lacks the stat bonus that keeps older heroes like Horghall or Quintus somewhat relevant (or at least survivable).
Emblem Path Analysis
If you insist on using her (perhaps for the Sorcerer class quests or purely for fun), you need to keep her alive long enough to cast.
The Survivor (Recommended)
- Path: Defense > Health > Attack
- Pros: Increases her survivability, allowing her to potentially fire her skill more than once. The increased health also slightly boosts her minion HP.
- Cons: Her damage, already low, will remain underwhelming.
The "Glass" Canon (Not Recommended)
- Path: Attack > Defense > Health
- Pros: Maximizes the hit-all damage and DoT ticks.
- Cons: With her outdated stats, she will likely die before charging her Average speed mana.
Final Recommendation
For most players, the Defense/Health path is recommended. If she's on your team, she's likely there to provide meat shields (minions) and chip damage, so staying alive is priority #1.
Strengths
- Hit-All: Hitting all enemies is always useful for finishing off weakened teams.
- Minion Summoning: Provides a small buffer of health to the entire team.
- Class: Sorcerer class allows a chance to slow mana generation, which can be annoying on a hit-all skill.
Weaknesses
- Atrocious Stats: Completely left behind by power creep.
- Low Damage: 250% is 4-star territory.
- Weak Minions: 10% HP is easily destroyed.
- Average Speed: Too slow for the low impact of the skill.
- No Passives: Lacks the utility of modern heroes.
Best Game Modes
- Farming: Her hit-all animation is reasonably fast, making her okay for auto-farming low-level map stages.
- Rush Attack (Very Fast) Wars: The only place she might see play. At Very Fast speed, the 250% damage and minion summon become "okay" spam, but there are still dozens of better purple options (e.g., Killhare, Grimble).
- Sorcerer Class Quests: If you lack other 5-star Sorcerers.
Advanced Strategy & Team Compositions
Note: "Advanced" here implies trying to make a sub-par hero work.
Minion Spam Synergy
Pair her with Pengi. Peppermint summons a minion for everyone, which fuels Pengi's chain attack. This is her one true niche.
- Team: Mother North - Peppermint - Pengi - Krampus - (Healer/Hitter)
- Why: Maximize the Winter Family bonus and give Pengi plenty of ammo.
The "Purple Stack"
- Team: Tiburtus (C) - Rigard (C) - Peppermint
- Why: You need Defense Down (Tiburtus) and Attack Up (Rigard) to make Peppermint's damage feel significant.
Counters & Anti-Synergies
- Minion Destroyers: Grimble, Ogima, and newer heroes like Topaz or Eloise eat Peppermint's team for breakfast.
- Cleansers: Any healer who cleanses makes her DoT useless.
- Taunt: Prevents her from hitting everyone (though she is AoE, taunt usually restricts targeting).
Advice for New Players
If Peppermint is your first 5-star hero, congratulations! Max her out. A 5-star hero is always better than a 3-star. She will carry you through map stages and early raids. However, do not Limit Break her (use Aethers) or give her Master Emblems. Save those precious resources for a more modern hero.
Advice for Veterans
She is 100% Soul Exchange fodder. There is no reason to level her over almost any other purple 5-star project. Even classic heroes with costumes are often better.
Community Corner: Hot Takes & History
The community has never been kind to Peppermint. Even on her release day, the sentiment was harsh:
- "There has to be a dud in every portal. Peppermint is the dud."
- "This card would be obsolete even in 2020."
- One player lamented pulling her: "Wow⦠just pulled this turd⦠really disappointed."
- Another noted her lack of impact: "In defense, utter rubbish... Peppermint doesn't scare me."
These quotes highlight that she was undertuned from day one, and time has only made it worse.
Final Thoughts
Peppermint is a hero with a fun design and a grim fate. She suffers from being a "jack of all trades, master of none" in a game that rewards specialists and raw power. Her potions are watered down, her minions are fragile, and her stats belong in a museum. Unless you are building a thematic Christmas defense team for fun or feeding Pengi, Peppermint is best left on the benchβor traded away at the Soul Exchange for someone who packs a real punch.
Verdict: A stocking stuffer of coal. Only level if you have absolutely no other 5-star Dark heroes.
