Shale: The Ninja Who Heals... Himself?
Overview
Shale is a 4-star Fire hero from the Ninja Tower event, released back in the wild days of 2020. As a member of the Ninja family, he boasts the unique "Charge" mana speed, allowing him to fire his special skill at 100% (5 tiles), 200% (10 tiles), or 300% (15 tiles) mana. He was designed as a flexible healer and cleanser, but he has a notorious reputation in the community for being... well, a bit selfish. While his Ninja brethren are out there slicing enemies and bypassing defenses, Shale is often found in the corner, carefully applying band-aids to himself while his team burns.

Hero Art & Visuals
Shale sports the classic "Ninja of the Fire Nation" look. With his orange gi, face mask, and dual shurikens, he definitely looks the part. Heβs got that "Iβm about to do something cool" pose, which is ironic considering his special skill often involves him just standing there glowing while his teammates get pummeled. Itβs a solid design that fits the Ninja Tower theme perfectly, even if his actual performance doesn't quite match the lethality of his outfit.

Hero Stats
Base Stats (No Emblems)
| Level | Attack | Defense | Health | πͺPower |
|---|---|---|---|---|
4/70 | 603 | 626 | 1423 | 670 |
4/75lb1 | 655 | 681 | 1547 | 721 |
4/80lb2 | 760 | 789 | 1793 | 822 |
Shale's stats tell the story of a hero from a different era.
- Attack (603): This is incredibly low by modern standards. Even many modern 3-star heroes hit harder than this.
- Defense (626): Also quite low. He relies heavily on his health pool to survive.
- Health (1423): This is his one saving grace. His base health is surprisingly high, comparable to some older 5-star heroes. This massive HP pool allows him to sponge up some damage, which is good because his defense stat won't stop much.
Compared to modern 4-star "Construct" or "Toon" heroes who regularly sport 800+ Attack and Defense with similar Health, Shale is statistically behind the curve.
Special Skill: Channel Ki

Channel Ki
- 1x Mana Charge
- * The caster regenerates 411 HP over 3 turns.
- * Cleanses status ailments from the caster.
- 2x Mana Charge
- * The caster and nearby allies regenerate 549 HP over 3 turns.
- * Cleanses status ailments from the caster and nearby allies.
- 3x Mana Charge
- * All allies regenerate 714 HP over 3 turns.
- * Cleanses status ailments from all allies.
This special skill is the main source of contention with Shale. Let's break down why:
- x1 Charge (5 Tiles): Heals only the caster (411 HP over 3 turns) and cleanses only the caster. This is almost functionally useless in team play. A healer who uses 5 tiles just to keep themselves alive while the tank dies is not a team player.
- x2 Charge (10 Tiles): Heals the caster and nearby allies (549 HP over 3 turns) and cleanses them. This is functionally an Average speed heal (10 tiles) that misses half your team. Compare this to Costume Rigard, who charges in 9 tiles (effectively fast with troops) and heals/cleanses everyone while also boosting attack.
- x3 Charge (15 Tiles): Finally, he heals all allies (714 HP over 3 turns) and cleanses everyone. The heal amount is massiveβ714 HP is no joke. However, 15 tiles is "Very Slow" speed territory. In most raids, if you haven't fired your healer by 15 tiles, you're probably already dead.
By the Numbers
- Mana Speed Analysis:
- Charge x1: 5 Tiles. (Very Fast ghosting, but low impact).
- Charge x2: 10 Tiles. (Average speed equivalent).
- Charge x3: 15 Tiles. (Very Slow speed equivalent).
- Note: Ninja troops can shave a tile off these requirements, potentially making his x2 charge a 9-tile (Fast) move, which is his most viable breakpoints.
- Healing Output:
- x3 Charge: 714 HP / 3 turns = 238 HP per turn. This is a potent HoT (Heal over Time), stronger than most 4-star HoT effects, but the buildup time is the killer.
Family Bonus, Passives, Aether Power & Unique Abilities
The Ninja family bonus is arguably the best part of his kit.
Family Bonus

Tower - Ninjas
- Bonus for 1/2/3 Unique Heroes:
- 5%/10%/15% chance to dodge normal attacks and Special Skills
- 5%/10%/15% chance to counterattack with 60%/90%/120% of the damage received.
The chance to Dodge special skills or Counterattack is fantastic. This makes Shale deceptively tanky. He might dodge a sniper shot that would otherwise kill him, or reflect damage back. If you run him with other Ninjas (even 4-stars like Sapphire or Ametrine), this bonus becomes quite consistent.
Passives
No passives found
Shale does not have innate passives beyond the family bonus in his base form.
Aether Power

Damage Reduction
At the start of each battle, all damage received by this Hero is reduced by -10% for 6 turns.
Damage Reduction: This fits his "survivalist" theme. Since his job is to stay alive long enough to heal, taking less damage helps. It's a decent defensive perk, though it doesn't solve his offensive shortcomings.
Legacy & Modern Relevance
- Historical Context: Upon release, Shale was immediately overshadowed. Players compared him to Costume Rigard, Boldtusk, and Kiril, all of whom offered full-team support at reliable speeds. The "selfish" x1 charge was widely mocked.
- Power Creep Analysis: The game has moved towards faster, harder-hitting heroes. 4-star tournaments are dominated by Toons and fast event heroes. A healer who needs 15 tiles to heal the whole team is simply too slow, and a healer who heals only themselves at 5 tiles is a wasted slot.
- Modern Viability Verdict: Low. Shale is a niche hero at best. He is arguably one of the weakest 4-star heroes in the game when compared to the utility of his peers. He sits firmly on the bench for most players unless they are severely lacking in Red healers.
Emblem Path Analysis
If you insist on using Shale (perhaps for the Ninja Tower event itself or because you love the art), you need to keep him alive.
The Survivalist
- Path: Defense > Health > Attack
- Pros: Maximizes his high base HP and patches up his low Defense. This gives him the best chance to survive until he reaches x2 or x3 charge.
- Cons: His tile damage will be negligible.
Final Recommendation
Go Defense/Health. His attack stat is so low that boosting it won't make his tiles matter much, and his special does no damage. His only job is to live and cleanse.
Strengths
- Flexible Cleansing: Can cleanse himself very quickly (5 tiles) to shake off silence or mana blocks, ensuring he can keep charging.
- High Base HP: Can survive hits that would kill flimsier 4-stars.
- Family Bonus: The dodge/counter chance is a legitimate lifesaver and can turn tides purely on RNG.
- Massive Heal (Eventually): If you can get to x3 charge, 714 HP is a huge amount of health recovery.
Weaknesses
- Selfish First Charge: The x1 charge is virtually useless for team support.
- Inefficient Second Charge: Heals only 3 targets at Average speed (10 tiles), whereas standard healers hit everyone.
- Slow Full Potential: Reaching x3 charge (15 tiles) takes too long in modern fast-paced metas.
- Outdated Stats: Low defense makes him squishy despite his high HP.
- No Buffs: Unlike Boldtusk (Attack Up) or C. Rigard (Attack Up), Shale brings zero offensive utility to the team.
Best Game Modes
- Ninja Tower: The blessings in the tower allow you to pick "Mana on 5 turns" or "Mana on cast," which can make his x2 and x3 charges much easier to reach.
- Rush Attack Tournaments: Paradoxically, he's worse in Rush because his charge mechanic doesn't change (he's still Charge speed), while everyone else becomes Very Fast. Avoid him here.
- Bloody Battle: Do not use. He is a pure healer. In Bloody Battle, he is a paperweight.
- Cleanse War: If you desperately need a Red cleanser and don't have C. Kelile or others, he is a "better than nothing" option.
Advanced Strategy & Team Compositions
Sample Team Ideas
- The "Please Don't Die" Red Stack: Boldtusk - Falcon - Shale - Gormek - Scarlett. Here, Shale acts as a backup cleanser/healer to support Boldtusk. If Boldtusk dies, Shale can try to sustain the survivors.
- The Ninja Family Band: Shale - Ametrine - Sapphire. The goal here is purely to maximize the Dodge/Counter family bonus. It's a fun, RNG-heavy team for 4-star tournaments.
Counters & Anti-Synergies
- Dispellers: Since his heal is a HoT (Heal over Time), any dispeller like Sonya or Caedmon can wipe away his hard-earned healing instantly.
- Vampires/Healing Stealers: Heroes who steal healing turn Shale into a liability.
Advice for New Players
If Shale is your first 4-star Red healer, level him up, but stop as soon as you get Boldtusk. Boldtusk is superior in almost every way (heals all, buffs attack, durable). Do not give Shale Limit Break materials unless you are swimming in them.
Advice for Veterans
Shale is effectively a collector's item or a "Project" hero for when you are bored. There is almost no competitive reason to use him over the myriad of other 4-star options available today. Save your resources for the Toon versions of Classic heroes.
Community Corner: Hot Takes & History
The community has never been kind to Shale. From his release, he was identified as the weak link of the Ninja family.
- "I wasted mats on him. Heβs useless... tough to say what heβs meant to be. An unloved child of SG."
- "Just let him heal all team at every level of charge. Thatβs it."
- "He sits at the bottom of the barrel of red heroes for me."
The consensus is clear: without a buff to make his healing hit all allies at x1 or x2 charge, he remains one of the most regrettable ascensions for many players.
Final Thoughts
Shale is a cool concept that got lost in execution. The idea of a flexible ninja healer sounds great on paper, but in practice, a healer who doesn't heal his team until he's fully charged is just a liability. He's like that one friend who brings a first-aid kit to a party but only uses the band-aids on himself. Unless you are a die-hard Ninja Family completionist, leave this stone unturned.
Verdict: Bench. (Unless you really, really need a cleanser and have literally no one else).
