Zhuge Liang: The Master Strategist Who Takes His Time
Overview
Zhuge Liang, known as the "Master Strategist," is a Legendary Holy hero from the War of Three Kingdoms family. Released back in early 2022, he entered the game as a Slow mana speed Sorcerer designed to control the battlefield through a mix of defensive minions and disruptive fiends. While he doesn't carry a costume in this specific review (though one exists and is significantly stronger), we are focusing purely on his base form to see if the original tactician still has moves left to play.
He operates as a hybrid support tank, offering a unique "counterattack via minion" mechanic that was quite novel upon his release. Unfortunately, time waits for no one, not even legendary strategists, and his pacing feels more "leisurely stroll" than "blitzkrieg" in the modern era.

Hero Art & Visuals
Zhuge Liang's design screams "calm amidst chaos." Clad in flowing white and gold robes with the signature feather fan, he looks every bit the part of the sagacious advisor. The artwork captures a serene confidence, contrasting sharply with the brute force of many other warriors. It is a very clean, classical depiction that fits the Three Kingdoms theme perfectly, even if he looks like he's judging your puzzle-matching skills from behind those glasses.

Hero Stats
Base Stats (No Costume Bonus)
| Level | Attack | Defense | Health | πͺPower |
|---|---|---|---|---|
4/80 | 710 | 879 | 1545 | 835 |
4/85lb1 | 765 | 947 | 1665 | 891 |
4/90lb2 | 876 | 1084 | 1905 | 1001 |
When we look at Zhuge Liang's base stats (Attack: 710, Defense: 879, Health: 1545, Power: 835), the age of the card becomes immediately apparent. In the current meta, where new heroes frequently push 1000+ Attack and 2000+ Health before emblems and limit breaks, Zhuge Liang is severely under-statted.
His Defense stat was considered elite upon release, allowing him to serve as a formidable tank. Today, however, 879 Defense is merely "decent," and his low Health pool makes his minionsβwhich scale off his HPβsignificantly less durable than they need to be to survive modern slash attacks, let alone special skills.
Special Skill: Martial Masterstroke

Martial Masterstroke
- Summons a Shu Soldier Minion for each ally with 16% HP and 17% attack inherited from the caster.
- When summoned, the Shu Soldier Minion gives its owner the ability to counterattack with 60% of the damage received as long as the owner has a Shu Soldier Minion. This effect can't be dispelled.
- Summons a Shu Guerrilla Fiend for all enemies. The Fiend damages the enemies with 75% attack every turn.
- The Shu Guerrilla Fiend absorbs healing and disappears when it has absorbed 50% of its targets health.
Analysis: "Martial Masterstroke" is a busy skill. It does three main things:
- Summons Minions: A Shu Soldier Minion for every ally.
- Counterattack: These minions grant the owner a 50% counterattack.
- Summons Fiends: A Shu Guerrilla Fiend for every enemy.
On paper, this looks like incredible value. In practice, the numbers hurt him. The minions inherit only 9% HP and 17% Attack from the caster. With his base health around 1545, a 9% minion has roughly 140 HP. In today's game, a stiff breeze or a stray tile knocks that minion out. Since the counterattack is tied to the minion's existence, your "defensive buff" often vanishes before it can reflect any meaningful damage.
The fiends deal 65% damage per turn and absorb healing. They are annoying, yes, but at Slow speed, waiting 12 tiles to summon a fiend that might just get cleansed or overhealed away is a tough sell compared to faster, punchier modern heroes.
By the Numbers
- Mana Speed: Slow (12 tiles). With the Kingdom family bonus (2/4/6% mana generation), he can theoretically speed up slightly if paired with family members, but he generally requires a Level 23+ Mana Troop or a Level 11+ Magic/Cyclops/Styx troop to shave off a tile.
- Minion Health: ~140 HP (Base) up to ~170 HP (Maxed/Emblemed). This is extremely fragile.
- Minion Counterattack: 50% of incoming damage.
- Fiend Damage: 65% attack per turn. With ~800 attack (emblemed), that's roughly 520 damage per turn before defense reduction. In reality, it ticks for significantly less (often double digits) on high-defense enemies.
- Fiend Healing Absorption: 50% of target's max HP. This is the strongest part of his kit, forcing enemies to heal a massive amount to remove the parasite.
Family Bonus, Passives, Aether Power & Unique Abilities
Family Bonus

Three Kingdoms - Kingdoms
- Bonus for 1/2/3 Unique Heroes:
- 2% / 4% / 6% mana each time a Minion is summoned for the Hero.
- 3% / 5% / 7% heal each time a Minion is summoned for the Hero.
- Morale Boost:
- Heroes belonging to this family as well as heroes fighting alongside with them receive additional perks in War of the Three Kingdoms:
- +10% attack, + 3% defense, +7% health
The Kingdom family bonus grants mana generation and healing when minions are summoned. This synergizes well with his own skill, giving him a small boost whenever he fires. However, since he is Slow, relying on this to cycle his special is optimistic at best.
Passives
No passives found
The base version of Zhuge Liang does not have the powerful "Unstoppable Minions" passive found on his costume and newer Kingdom heroes. This is a significant disadvantage, as he is vulnerable to minion removal heroes like Grimble or Goretooth.
Aether Power

Fiend Resist
At the start of each battle, this Hero is immune to new Fiends for 6 turns.
Fiend Resist: This power allows him to resist fiends for the first 6 turns of battle. While useful against specifically Elizabeth or typical fiend-heavy defenses, on a Slow hero, it is purely defensive. It helps him survive to fire once, but doesn't accelerate his game plan.
Legacy & Modern Relevance
- Historical Context: Upon release, Zhuge Liang was met with mixed reviews. Players recognized his tank potential due to high defense, but many found his minions too flimsy and his speed too restrictive. He was often compared unfavorably to other " summoners" of the time.
- Power Creep Analysis: Power creep has not been kind to base Zhuge Liang. His stats are now 4-star level compared to modern 5-stars. His 9% HP minions are laughable against heroes who deal 400%+ damage to all.
- Modern Viability Verdict: Bench / Niche. Unless you are playing in a very specific format like Rush Attack where his speed is mitigated, or you are a new player with limited 5-star options, base Zhuge Liang struggles to justify a roster spot. He simply takes too long to do too little.
Costume & Costume Bonus
The Elephant in the Room: This review focuses on the base hero, but we must address the Costume (Zhuge Liang C1).
- Stats: The costume boosts his stats massively (Power 1105 vs 835).
- Minions: The costume summons minions with 33% HP. Base is 9% HP. That is a triple increase.
- Passive: The costume adds the "Unstoppable Minions" passive.
- Bonus: The costume bonus itself gives huge stat increases (35% Attack, 35% Defense, 45% Health, 5% Mana).
Verdict: If you have the costume, use the costume. The base version is obsolete in comparison. The costume turns him from a "soft" tank into a "wall."
Emblem Path Analysis
If you are using base Zhuge Liang, you are likely using him as a tank or a flank to soak damage.
The Stalwart Strategist (Defense/Health)
- Path: Defense > Health > Attack
- Pros: Maximizes his survival chances to ensure he fires at least once. Increases the HP of his minions slightly (since minion HP scales off hero max HP).
- Cons: His tile damage and fiend damage will be negligible.
The Aggressive Advisor (Attack/Defense)
- Path: Attack > Defense > Health
- Pros: Makes fiends tick for slightly more damage.
- Cons: He might die before casting. His minions will be even flimsier.
Final Recommendation
For most players, the Defense/Health path is recommended. His primary utility is the healing absorption from fiends and the annoyance of minions; dead strategists summon neither.
Strengths
- Healing Denial: The fiends absorb 50% of the target's max HP in healing. This is a massive amount and can completely shut down healer-heavy teams if they can't cleanse or overheal quickly.
- Counterattack Mechanic: Granting counterattack via minions is a unique way to deter AoE hitters, provided the minions survive the initial hit.
- Class: Sorcerer class allows him to potentially delay enemy mana generation with Delay Talent.
Weaknesses
- Speed: Slow mana is a killer in modern Empires & Puzzles.
- Minion Fragility: 9% HP minions are too weak to serve as reliable meat shields or counterattack sources.
- Stat Deficit: His base stats are far behind the curve.
- Vulnerability: Minion removers (Grimble, Topaz, Eloise) completely neuter his defensive utility.
Best Game Modes
- Rush Attack Wars/Tournaments: This is his only true home. At Very Fast speed, he can fire quickly, overwhelming the enemy with fiends and blocking their healing before they can stabilize.
- Bloody Battle: Paradoxically, he can be okay here not for the healing absorb (which is useless) but because the minions provide "fake healing" via HP meat shields, and the counterattack adds damage.
Advanced Strategy & Team Compositions
Sample Team Ideas
- The "Minion Spam" (Rush): Mother North - Zhuge Liang - Freya - Pengi - Ludwig
- Why: In Rush, this team floods the board with minions. Zhuge adds the counterattack layer and fiends, while Pengi capitalizes on the number of minions for damage.
- The "Fiend Overload": Senan - Zhuge Liang - Elizabeth - Hannah - Viscaro
- Why: Stack as many fiends as possible to make healing impossible. If the enemy cannot heal, they eventually wither away.
Counters & Anti-Synergies
- Counters: Grimble (eats minions for mana), Eloise (removes minions and prevents new ones), Esme (removes fiends and heals), Arco (turns fiends into minions).
- Anti-Synergies: Pairing him with heroes who overwrite minions (like other weak minion summoners) can be detrimental if you replace a beefy minion with his weak one.
Advice for New Players
If Zhuge Liang is your first 5-star yellow, congratulations! He is a solid tank for early game map stages and lower-tier raids. His minions will protect your team, and the fiends will frustrate enemy healers. Level him up, but be wary of spending precious resources like Alpha Aethers on him unless you get his costume.
Advice for Veterans
Without the costume, base Zhuge Liang is likely a benchwarmer or Soul Exchange fodder. His stats and minion HP simply do not hold up in wars against modern defenses. He might see play in a backup Rush War team, but even there, there are often better options. Do not Limit Break him unless you have the Costume.
Community Corner: Hot Takes & History
Back in 2022, the community was skeptical.
- One user noted: "A 1-time counterattack on a slow hero... by the time you have him charged to summon 5 minions, you already won without him."
- Another added: "Minions are too weak, fiends kind of exist. No base damage, only meant for pure support for a slow hero."
- However, some defenders pointed out: "The fiend absorbs massive amounts of health. Zhuge Liang is meant for drawn-out battles."
The consensus was that he was "underwhelming" and "passive," a sentiment that has only grown stronger as the game sped up.
Final Thoughts
Base Zhuge Liang is a hero out of time. His kit is conceptually interestingβa strategic layer of defense and disruptionβbut the numbers attached to it (Slow speed, 9% minions) are artifacts of an older era. He is the "Sleeping Dragon" who perhaps hit the snooze button a few too many times.
If you have him without the costume, cherish him for what he was, or use him in Rush. If you pull his Costume, however, wake up! You have a monster on your hands. But that is a story for another review.
Verdict: C- Tier (Base) / A+ Tier (With Costume)
