Costumed Emilio: From Phoenixes to Frogs

Overview

Emilio has returned with a costume that swaps his dignified top hat for... a frog mask? "The Great Frog Tamer" (yes, really) brings a massive stat overhaul to this classic Very Fast hero. Released in April 2025, this costume attempts to modernize Emilio's kit, shifting him from a pure support survivor to a slightly more aggressive disruptor. This review focuses on his Costumed version, analyzing whether the stat injection and new passive are enough to make him a meta contender again.

Hero Art & Visuals

If the base version was "Gothic Ringmaster," the costume is "Psychedelic Swamp Circus." The green frog mask and vibrant colors are a stark departure from the original's red and black palette. It’s certainly... memorable. While some might miss the dapper skeleton look, the sheer absurdity of "The Great Frog Tamer" fits the chaotic energy of the Starfall Circus perfectly. It’s weird, it’s colorful, and it definitely stands out in a lineup.

Stat Analysis: The costume brings Emilio roaring into the present day. With a base Power of 1211 (compared to the original 809), he is no longer a glass cannonβ€”he's a reinforced steel cannon. His HP jumps from a paltry 1400 to a massive 2336, and his Defense skyrockets to 1164. This is the single most important upgrade. He can finally take a hit from modern snipers like Turundh or Jwala without instantly vaporizing, allowing him to actually use his Very Fast skills.

Mana Speed
Very Fast
  • Casts one of the following Special Skills:
  • If any enemy has the Burn status ailment:
  • * All enemies receive 715 Burn damage over 5 turns.
  • * All allies regenerate 450 HP over 3 turns.
  • * All allies are immune to new status ailments for 3 turns.
  • Otherwise:
  • * All enemies receive 620 Burn damage over 5 turns.
  • * All allies are immune to new status ailments for 3 turns.

Skill Analysis: The core mechanic remains the same (Burn + conditional effects), but the numbers have shifted:

  • More Fire: The burn damage has significantly increased (715 vs 415). This makes him a legitimate threat over time rather than just an annoyance.
  • Less Healing: The healing has dropped (450 vs 549). This is a notable nerf to his sustain potential. The costume pushes him more towards a "Damage Dealer/Support" hybrid rather than a "Healer/Support."
  • Same Great Taste (Immunity): The 3-turn ailment immunity is still here, and with his new bulk, he’s much more likely to keep applying it.

By the Numbers

  • Mana Speed: Very Fast. This is still his defining feature.
  • Damage Output: 715 Burn over 5 turns = 143 damage/turn. This is nearly double the base version's output. While still a DoT, it puts actual pressure on the enemy team.
  • Healing: 150 HP per turn. It’s barely a scratch compared to modern burst healers, but it mitigates chip damage.

Family Bonus, Passives, Aether Power & Unique Abilities

The costume introduces a new passive that adds a layer of "don't touch me" to his kit.

Challenge Festival II - Starfall

  • Bonus for 1/2/3 Heroes:
  • 50%/75%/100% chance to cleanse the Hero's most recent cleansable status ailment at the end of each turn.
  • The members of this family have additional perks in the Challenge Festival events.

Analysis: The cleanse chance remains excellent. Combined with his Very Fast speed, he is incredibly hard to lock down.

Passives

Inherent Abilities

Passive Skills

  • Copy Ailment on Cleanse
When a status ailment is cleansed from this hero, a new copy of the cleansed ailment is applied on a random enemy.

Analysis: Copy Ailment on Cleanse: When an ailment is cleansed from him, a copy is thrown onto a random enemy. This is hilarious and potentially devastating. If you cleanse a defense down or a mindless attack from him, he just hands it right back to the enemy. It turns the Starfall Family cleanse into a weapon.

Aether Power

Attack Up
Aether Power

Attack Up

At the start of each battle, this Hero gets 20% attack for 6 turns

In battles with multiple waves, the effect is refreshed at the beginning of each wave.

Analysis: Attack Up fits his new, more aggressive profile. It boosts his burn damage further, leaning into his role as a whittler.

Legacy & Modern Relevance

  • Historical Context: The base Emilio was a legend in his time. The Costume attempts to recapture that glory by fixing his biggest flaw: his stats.
  • Power Creep: The stat boost puts him on par with 2024/2025 heroes. He is no longer "outdated" in terms of survivability.
  • Modern Viability Verdict: Viable. He isn't the game-breaking monster he was in 2021 because immunity is more common now (Hathor, etc.), but a Very Fast immunity generator with 2800+ HP (LB2) is always useful. He excels in fast-paced matches where preventing ailments early is key.

Costume & Costume Bonus

  • Base vs. Costume:
    • Survivability: Costume wins on raw stats, hands down.
    • Healing: Base wins (549 vs 450).
    • Class: Base (Druid) offers minions for survival; Costume (Wizard) offers Jinx for extra damage.
    • Passive: Costume has the "Copy Ailment" passive; Base has nothing.
  • Verdict: Use the Costume. The stats are too good to ignore. The drop in healing is worth the massive increase in bulk and burn damage. The only exception is if you desperately need the higher HoT and are confident you can keep the fragile Base form alive (perhaps with the costume bonus stats applied).

Emblem Path Analysis

With his new bulk and "Wizard" class, you have more flexibility.

  • Path: Defense > Health > Attack
  • Pros: Ensures he stays alive to keep the immunity loop going. His burn is strong enough without full attack emblems.
  • Cons: Misses out on maximizing the Jinx talent.

The Spicy Frog

  • Path: Attack > Health > Defense
  • Pros: Maximizes DoT damage and Jinx proc chance.
  • Cons: Still risky against top-tier snipers, even with improved stats.

Final Recommendation

Stick to the Defense/Health path. His primary value is utility (Immunity), not damage. If he's dead, he provides zero immunity.

Strengths

  • Modernized Bulk: Finally has the HP to survive in the current meta.
  • Offensive Pressure: The increased burn damage actually hurts now.
  • Passive Punisher: The "Copy Ailment" passive discourages enemies from spamming ailments on him (or punishes them when he cleanses them).

Weaknesses

  • Weaker Healing: 450 HP over 3 turns is very low for a modern "healer." Do not bring him as your solo healer.
  • Conditional: Still relies on the burn condition to reach full potential.
  • Wizard Class: Jinx is less defensively useful than the Druid's minions.

Best Game Modes

  • Rush Wars: A bulky, Very Fast immunity provider is a nightmare for the defense to deal with.
  • Raids (Offense): Great for countering ailment-heavy defenses (e.g., against heavy DoT teams).
  • Bloody Battle: Incredible here. He provides immunity and damage, and the reduced healing doesn't matter since healing is disabled anyway.

Advanced Strategy & Team Compositions

Costumed Emilio works best as a "Secondary Support/Attacker."

Sample Team Ideas

  • The Toxic Duo: Costume Emilio - Rayne/Narcisa. Combine his burn with heavy poison/damage.
  • The Sustain Engine: Costume Emilio - Hathor. Double immunity coverage. When one is down, the other is up.
  • The "Stop Hitting Yourself" Team: Costume Emilio - Azamia - Ferrus. Reflects and counter-ailments galore.

Counters & Anti-Synergies

  • Counters: Goldie/Cleansers. If they cleanse his burn, he loses his conditional trigger for the next cast.
  • Anti-Synergy: Healing-Dependent Teams. If your team needs big heals to survive, C. Emilio won't cut it.

Advice for New Players

If you pull the costume, level it immediately. The stats alone make him a carry for early/mid-game content. Use him to breeze through difficult map stages by blocking boss ailments.

Advice for Veterans

He is a luxury tool. Excellent for depth in War teams, especially for Rush. He likely won't replace your top-tier main defense heroes, but having a Very Fast immunity hero with 1200+ Power is a card you'll want in your deck for specific counters.

Community Corner: Hot Takes & History

  • The Skeptic: "I don't think this hero is usable at all... Do not double limit broke this guy." Some players felt the damage increase didn't justify the lower healing.
  • The Counterpoint: Others argue that in the modern meta, any hero with 1400 HP (base) is unusable, so the Costume is the only way to use Emilio, regardless of the healing nerf.
  • The Consensus: He's not the "must-have" he was in 2021, but the costume breathes valuable life into a dusty roster spot.

Final Thoughts

Costumed Emilio is a successful modernization. He trades a bit of his supportive soul (healing) for a thicker skin and a sharper bite. While he might not be the undisputed king of reds anymore, "The Great Frog Tamer" proves that you can teach an old dog (or frog) new tricksβ€”mostly by feeding him steroids until his stats match the current year.

Verdict: A revitalized classic that trades healing for survivability and disruption.
