Costumed Frank: The Mobster's Cold Case
Overview
Released in 2021, Costumed Frank (or "The Mobster") completely reimagines the hero's role. While the original was a blunt instrument of defense reduction, the Costume attempts to emulate the legendary 5-star hero Skadi. He is a Slow mana speed Monk who aims to punish minion-heavy teams by stacking permanent frost damage and mana generation debuffs for every enemy (or minion) he kills. Heβs a "Budget Skadi" for the 4-star arena, but does he have the muscle to pull off the job?

Hero Art & Visuals
Frank trades his rags for riches, donning a pinstripe suit, fedora, and glasses. Itβs a fantastic "mob enforcer" look that fits his nickname "The Mobster." The art implies a bit more sophistication than the base versionβhe's not just smashing things; he's "taking care of business." Itβs arguably one of the better 4-star costume designs thematically, turning a monster into a hitman.

Hero Stats
Base Stats (No Emblems)
| Level | Attack | Defense | Health | πͺPower |
|---|---|---|---|---|
4/70 | 656 | 645 | 1334 | 681 |
4/75lb1 | 713 | 701 | 1450 | 733 |
4/80lb2 | 827 | 813 | 1681 | 837 |
Even with the costume stat boost, Frank is fighting an uphill battle against modern stats.
- Attack: ~656 vs ~800+ (Modern 4-stars like Hotspin)
- Defense: ~645 vs ~800+
- Health: ~1334 vs ~1500+
His attack stat is particularly concerning for his specific role. Since his special skill relies on killing targets to trigger his stacks, having an outdated attack stat makes his job incredibly difficult without massive support (attack buffs, defense down on enemies).
Special Skill: Undead Razer (Costume)

Undead Obliterator
- Deals 170% damage to all enemies
- The damage is increased by 45% for each dead enemy.
- Stack (Max:10): All enemies receive 20 Frost damage per each killed enemy or enemy Minion at the end of each turn.
- Stack (Max: 10): All enemies get -4% mana generation per each killed enemy or enemy Minion.
The Mobsterβs skill is a complex stacking mechanic:
- Hit All (170%): This is significantly lower than the base version's 200%. This reduction is painful because he needs to kill things for the rest of the skill to matter.
- Damage Bonus: Like the base, he deals +45% damage per dead enemy. This helps him clean up heroes, but doesn't help him kill the first wave of minions.
- The Stack (Frost Damage): 20 damage per turn per kill (Max 10 stacks).
- The Stack (Mana Gen): -4% mana generation per kill (Max 10 stacks).
The "Skadi" Problem: Skadi is famous because she can wipe a board of minions and instantly cripple the enemy team with stacks. Frank tries to do this at 4-star level. However, 170% damage from a hero with ~656 base attack often fails to kill even 4-star minions, let alone sturdy 5-star ones. If he doesn't kill anything, he applies zero stacks, and his turn is effectively wasted.
By the Numbers
- Mana Speed: Slow (12 tiles).
- Kill Thresholds:
- To apply max stacks (10), he needs to kill 10 entities (minions or heroes).
- If he kills 5 minions: Enemies take 100 Frost Damage/turn and have -20% Mana Gen.
- If he kills 0 minions: 0 Effect.
- Damage Potential: 170% is weak. For comparison, a modern 4-star AoE hitter might do 300%+.
- Stack vs Base Defense Down: The Base version's -44% Defense Down is guaranteed. The Costume's stacks are conditional. In 90% of scenarios, the guaranteed -44% Defense Down provides more "Effective Damage" to your team than the uncertain possibility of a small DoT.
Family Bonus, Passives, Aether Power & Unique Abilities
Family Bonus

Monthly Event - Morlovia
- Bonus for 1/2/3 Unique Heroes:
- +3%/+6%/+9% mana generation
- The members of this family have additional perks in the Halloween event.
The Morlovia family bonus (+Mana Gen) is nice, but Frank really wishes it was an Attack bonus to help him secure those vital minion kills.
Passives
Passive Skills
Steal BuffWhen this character casts their Special Skill, they have a 65% chance to steal the newest dispellable buff from a random enemy that has buffs. If no enemy has buffs, deals 150% damage to all enemies.
Steal Buff: This passive (added later to the family) is a godsend. If he steals an Attack Buff or Defense Buff before hitting, his chances of killing minions skyrocket. If he deals the extra 150% damage (when no buffs are present), he hits for 320% total, which actually makes him a viable killer!
Aether Power

Special Boost
At the start of each battle, this Hero's Special Skill deals an additional 30% damage for 6 turns.
Special Boost: This is perfect for him. It boosts his special skill damage, directly addressing his biggest weakness (inability to secure kills).
Legacy & Modern Relevance
- Historical Context: When released, players were excited for a "4-star Skadi." However, reality quickly set in: he just didn't hit hard enough to kill the minions of the era (Bera/Freya).
- Power Creep Analysis: Modern minions (from heroes like the 5-star constructs or even modern 4-stars) have HP pools that far exceed Frank's damage cap. He is almost incapable of killing modern minions without an Attack Buff (e.g., from Boldtusk/Kiril) and Defense Down on the enemy (e.g., Grimm/Morel).
- Modern Viability Verdict: Extremely Situational. He is largely a "Bench" hero compared to his Base form. His only real niche is in Rush Wars against specifically weak minion summoners (like Druids or older HOTMs). Against modern meta minion summoners, he will bounce off their minions harmlessly.
Costume & Costume Bonus
Costume vs. Base:
- Class: Monk (Costume) vs Barbarian (Base). Monk is generally better for resisting ailments (like Attack Down) that would stop him from doing his job.
- Role: Base is a setup hero (Defense Down). Costume is a specific counter hero (Minion/Stacker).
- Recommendation: Stick to the Base version. The reliability of the Defense Down far outweighs the "dream scenario" of the Costume's stacks. Use the Costume only if you are facing a team with very weak minions and you can buff Frank's attack first.
Emblem Path Analysis
If you insist on using the Costume, you MUST go full Attack. His entire kit fails if he doesn't secure kills.
The Hitman (Mandatory for Costume)
- Path: Attack > Defense > Health
- Pros: Maximizes the chance of killing minions to trigger stacks.
- Cons: Still squishy.
- Reasoning: A Frank with high defense who can't kill a minion is a useless Frank. You have to go all-in on Attack.
Final Recommendation
Attack Path.
Strengths
- Potential to Cripple: If he does get the kills, the permanent mana generation debuff is devastating in long fights.
- Monk Class: Resist helps him avoid being neutralized before firing.
- Passive Synergy: The Steal Buff/Extra Damage passive gives him a secondary win condition.
Weaknesses
- Low Damage Output: 170% hit often fails to kill minions, rendering his stacks useless.
- Conditional Success: Requires a "Goldilocks" scenario (enemies have minions, but weak ones; Frank is charged; Frank has attack buff).
- Slow Speed: By the time he fires, enemies might have too many minions or too much HP.
Best Game Modes
- Rush Attack (Minion Wars): The only place he truly shines. Firing him repeatedly increases the chance of stacking.
- PvE (Map Stages): Great for farming stages with many weak mob enemies, as he can rack up stacks quickly.
Advanced Strategy & Team Compositions
To make Costumed Frank work, you must serve him kills on a silver platter.
Sample Team Ideas
- The Setup Squad: Costume Kiril (Def Down + Attack Buff) + Costume Frank. You fire Kiril first. The Defense Down + Attack Buff allows Frank to actually kill the minions and apply his stacks.
- The Double Tap: Grimm + Costume Frank. Grimm softens them up significantly, allowing Frank to sweep and stack.
Counters & Anti-Synergies
- Minion Buffers: Heroes that beef up minions (like Freya or Frosth) make them unkillable for Frank.
- Attack Debuffers: Skittleskull or any attack reducer ensures Frank kills nothing.
Advice for New Players
If you pull the costume, level it for the stat bonus, but play with the Base Hero. The Base hero is much easier to use and effective in more situations. The Costume is a trap for new players who might not understand the difficulty of securing minion kills.
Advice for Veterans
You know how Skadi works. You know the math. Frank C1 is fun for 4-star tournaments if you want a challenge, but competitively, he's too unreliable. If you use him, pair him with Costume Kiril or c2Li Xiu to ensure he can breach the minion HP threshold.
Community Corner: Hot Takes & History
- "I donβt think C Frank will easily be killing any minionsβ¦ many will be disappointed hitting Bera immediately after she fires and seeing zero minions killed." - A prophetic forum user predicting his main issue.
- "Original Frank is way better than his costume IMO." - A common sentiment among experienced players.
- "Used costume frank in war today. Costume rigard attack boost definitely helped. Those stacks are nice." - Confirmation that he needs support to work.
Final Thoughts
Costumed Frank is a mobster who talks a big game but often forgets to bring his gun. He tries to emulate the power of Skadi but lacks the raw stats to execute the hit. While the idea of stacking mana debuffs is tantalizing, the condition of "killing blows" is a hurdle too high for his modest attack stat. Heβs a fun toy for specific Rush setups, but when the heat is on, youβre better off relying on the brute force of his original form.
Verdict: Level the costume for the bonus, but keep the fedora in the closet unless you have a specific plan to make him work.
