Ilmarinen: The Slow-Burning Smith of Kalevala
Overview
Ilmarinen, the legendary blacksmith of Finnish mythology, arrived in Empires & Puzzles in June 2022 as part of the Kalevala event. A 5-star Fire hero, he brought a toolkit that screamed "control" with a massive mana cut and a unique enemy damage share mechanic. While his base form has certainly shown its age in the stat department, his specific combination of skills keeps him relevant for players who enjoy watching titans crumble or enemies sharing their pain. He is a Slow hero, which is often a death sentence in modern raids, but don't count the old smith out just yetβhe still has a few tricks up his soot-stained sleeves.
This review focuses on the base version of Ilmarinen.

Hero Art & Visuals
Ilmarinen is depicted as a burly, cheerful blacksmith, radiating the warmth of his forge. With a massive hammer in one hand and a crafting tool in the other, he looks ready to build a Sampo or smash a goblin. The art style fits the rustic, mythical vibe of the Kalevala family perfectly. Compared to his "Gold" costume, which leans into a steampunk-industrial aesthetic with goggles and more intricate gear, the original feels more traditional and grounded. He looks like the kind of guy who would buy you a mead after flattening your defense team.

Base Stats (No Costume Bonus)

4/90lb2 | 1064 | 1143 | 2212 | 1127 |
Stat Analysis: Let's not beat around the bush: Ilmarinen's base stats are from a bygone era. With 756 Attack, 819 Defense, and 1472 Health, he is severely underpowered compared to modern 2025/2026 heroes who regularly flaunt 1300+ Attack and 2200+ Health out of the box. In the current meta, his survivability is questionable without Limit Breaking and heavy embleming. He is a "Fighter" class, which gives him a chance to revive, a crucial survival tool for a slow hero who might die before firing. However, without his costume bonus or modern stats, he is essentially a glass cannon that fires slowlyβa dangerous combination.
Special Skill: Forged in Fire

Forged in Fire
- Reduces the mana of all Ice enemies by 40%. Reduces the mana of all other enemies by 20%.
- All enemies become Soul Connected for 4 turns. Soul Connected enemies share received damage. This status effect is undispellable and lasts 2 turns longer on Ice characters.
- All enemies get -56% defense for 4 turns. Against Ice characters, this status effect becomes uncleansable and lasts 2 turns longer.
Analysis: "Forged in Fire" is a high-risk, high-reward skill.
- Mana Cut: A 40% mana cut to Ice enemies and 20% to others is significant. In Rush wars, this can completely stall an offense. However, at Slow speed, you often fire this after the enemy has already unleashed their specials, diminishing its value.
- Damage Share: This is his signature move. Forcing enemies to share damage (Soul Connect) turns snipers into AoE hitters and AoE hitters into nukes. It is undispellable, which is massive.
- Defense Down: -56% defense is a top-tier debuff, rivaling the likes of regular Wilbur but with a higher percentage.
- Ice Bias: The skill is significantly stronger against Ice enemies, making him a specific counter to Blue-heavy teams, though bringing a Red hero against Blues is always a gamble.
Comparison to Costume: The costume upgrades every single number here. The mana cut jumps to 50%/30%, and the defense down hits -60%. If you have the costume, the base skill feels like a prototype.
By the Numbers
- Mana Speed: Slow (12 tiles). With a lvl 29 Mana troop (+15%) and his family bonus, you can shave a tile or two off, but he will never be "fast."
- Damage: 0 direct damage. His damage contribution is entirely enabling other heroes.
- Defense Down: -56%. On a Titan with 5000 defense, this strips 2800 defense points alone. This is his primary claim to fame.
- Effective Health: With base stats of ~1472 HP and ~819 Def, his effective health is vastly lower than modern tanks who sit at ~6000+ effective HP. He relies heavily on his passive heal to survive.
Family Bonus, Passives, Aether Power & Unique Abilities
The Kalevala family offers unique protections against their weaker element, and Ilmarinen's passive is a lifesaver.
Family Bonus

Monthly Event - Kalevala
- Bonus for 1/2/3 Unique Heroes:
- Receive -10%/-25%/-40% less damage from the Special Skills of the stronger element.
- The members of this family have additional perks in the Kalevala event.
Analysis: Receiving less damage from Special Skills of the stronger element (Ice for Ilmarinen) is excellent. It helps mitigate the risk of bringing him against Blue titans or defenses.
Passives
Passive Skills
Power of SisuWhen this character starts a turn with low health for the first time during a battle, they recover 15% health and receive 15% mana.
Analysis:Power of Sisu is fantastic. Recovering 15% health and gaining 15% mana when dropping to low health can be the clutch moment that allows him to fire his skill right before dying. For a slow hero, this passive mana gain is often the difference between victory and defeat.
Aether Power

Attack Up
At the start of each battle, this Hero gets 20% attack for 6 turns
Analysis:Attack Up is... okay. Since Ilmarinen doesn't deal direct damage with his special, this only boosts his tile damage. While useful for Titans, a Defensive or Mana-boosting Aether Power would have been far superior for his role.
Legacy & Modern Relevance
- Historical Context: Upon release, Ilmarinen was hailed as "Wilbur's Big Brother." He was a Titan specialist and a Rush Attack menace. Players loved the massive defense down but lamented the slow speed.
- Power Creep: The stat gap is undeniable. Modern 4-star heroes now have better stats than base Ilmarinen. His slow speed makes him a liability in standard raids where speed is king.
- Modern Viability:
- Titans: Viable. He remains a top-tier choice for Green Titans due to the massive -56% Defense Down and high tile damage (especially if Limit Broken).
- Rush Wars: Viable. He is still a nuisance in Rush Attack tournaments and wars, especially if he manages to fire and link the enemy team.
- Standard Raids: Bench. He is simply too slow and fragile for modern diamond arena raids.
Costume & Costume Bonus
Base vs. Costume: The costume is a straight upgrade in almost every regard.
- Stats: The costume brings his stats into the 2026 era (1151 Attack vs 756 Base).
- Skill: The Costume increases the Defense Down to -60% and the Mana Cut to -50% for Ice enemies.
- Class: The Costume is a Monk (Resist Ailments), while the Base is a Fighter (Revive). This is the only area where the Base might arguably have a niche advantage (the chance to revive is powerful on defense), but the Monk's resistance is generally more consistent.
Recommendation: If you have the costume, use the costume. The stats alone make the base version obsolete for everything except maybe a very specific Fighter class quest.
Emblem Path Analysis
Since Ilmarinen's main job is to survive long enough to fire his skill (applying DD and Damage Share), durability is key.
The Survivor (Recommended)
- Path: Defense > Health > Attack
- Pros: Maximizes his low base defense and HP, giving him the best chance to survive tile dumps or sniper hits.
- Cons: Lower tile damage for Titans.
The Titan Slayer
- Path: Attack > Defense > Health
- Pros: Maximizes tile damage for high scores on Green Titans.
- Cons: Makes him extremely squishy in PvP.
Final Recommendation
For most players, the Survivor path (Defense/Health) is recommended to ensure he lives long enough to be useful. However, if you only use him for Titans, go full Attack.
Strengths
- Titan Decimator: -56% Defense Down is huge for high scores.
- Rush War Specialist: Massive mana cut and damage share can end games in Very Fast modes.
- Undispellable Effects: His status effects against Ice enemies cannot be cleansed, which is a hard counter to blue cleansers.
- Passive Recovery: The Power of Sisu provides a great survival safety net.
Weaknesses
- Glacial Speed: Slow mana is a major liability in the current fast-paced meta.
- Outdated Stats: Base stats are very low, making him fragile without heavy investment.
- No Direct Damage: He relies entirely on teammates to capitalize on his debuffs.
- Niche Element Bias: His full potential is locked behind facing Ice enemies, which is risky for a Red hero.
Best Game Modes
- Titans: His best role. High DD and tile damage.
- Rush Attack Wars/Tournaments: Where his speed penalty is negated.
- Challenge Events: Useful for achieving high scores by linking enemies and applying DD, allowing for massive AoE wipes.
Advanced Strategy & Team Compositions
Ilmarinen is a "setup" hero. He needs a "payoff" hero to follow him.
Sample Team Ideas
- The Titan Wrecking Crew:
- Miki (Atk Buff) - Guardian Falcon (EDD) - Ilmarinen (DD) - Phenexa (Crit/Reset) - Khufu (Hit All)
- Why: This stack maximizes damage. Ilmarinen provides the general defense down that stacks with Falcon's elemental down.
- The Rush Wipeout:
- Ludwig (Taunt/Mana) - Ilmarinen - Khufu - Colen (Costume) - Healer
- Why: Ludwig protects Ilmarinen. Once Ilmarinen fires, the enemies share damage. Then Khufu and Colen hit everyone, dealing compounded damage due to the link.
Counters & Anti-Synergies
- Counters:
- Monks/Clerics: Can resist his mana cut or defense down.
- Taunt Heroes: Prevent him from affecting the whole team.
- Mana Controllers: Hansel, Gretel, or Proteus can stop him from ever firing.
- Anti-Synergies:
- Wilbur: Their skills overwrite each other. Do not bring both.
Advice for New Players
If you pulled Ilmarinen early, he is a game-changer for your Titan scores and map progress. His ability to make enemies share damage helps clear tough boss waves. Level him, but be aware that he will struggle in raids as you climb higher.
Advice for Veterans
The base version of Ilmarinen is largely a relic. If you don't have the costume, he is likely a bench-warmer outside of Rush wars or a backup Titan team. Do not waste Alpha Aethers on the base version unless you are chasing top 100 event scores and lack better options.
Community Corner: Hot Takes & History
The community has always had a love-hate relationship with Ilmarinen.
- βSo a 5-star version of Wilbur who also mana cuts? Yes please.β β An optimistic player at launch.
- βHeβs so bad, even if they changed his mana speed to average heβd barely make it as a four-star hero.β β A disgruntled summoner comparing him unfavorably to Li Xiu.
- βI put him on tank in this Rush war and so far heβs holding the team nicely... he punishes blues greatly.β β A defender of his Rush War utility.
Final Thoughts
Base Ilmarinen is like a classic muscle car: cool to look at, fun to take out on Sundays (Rush Wars), but it lacks the safety features and performance of a modern vehicle (Costume/New Heroes). He defined a niche for Titan damage and event scoring, but without his costume, he is slowly fading into history. If you have him, cherish him for his Titan hits, but pray for his costume.
Verdict: A retired general, occasionally called back for special operations (Titans).
