Knuckles, The Macaque Sentinel: Reflecting Stacks with Jungle Fury

Overview

Knuckles is a 4-star Epic Ice (Blue) hero from the Jungle Hunter family, originally released around May 2023. As a Paladin, his primary job is survival, but his kit suggests a more mischievous role: turning your opponent's nastiest tricks back against them. While he might look like he's ready to star in a "Journey to the West" adaptation, in Empires & Puzzles, he serves as a specific counter-measure to some of the most annoying mechanics in the game: ailments and, uniquely, stacks.

Knuckles

Hero Art & Visuals

The artwork for Knuckles is vibrant and full of character. He sports a "Macaque Sentinel" look, complete with tribal armor and a fierce, toothy expression that says, "I might be a monkey, but I will absolutely ruin your day." The color palette is a mix of icy blues and jungle greens, fitting his element and family perfectly. It's a dynamic pose that suggests agility and aggression, which ironically contrasts with his purely defensive and reflective special skill. He definitely stands out compared to the generic knights and wizards of the classic era.

With a base power of 687 (and reaching 844 at LB2), Knuckles sits comfortably in the "modern 4-star" bracket, though he is starting to trail behind the very latest power-creeped releases (like the Construct or Opera 4-stars which push 700+ base power).

  • Attack (626): Relatively low. He isn't designed to be a damage dealer.
  • Defense (669): Solid, especially for a 4-star.
  • Health (1402): Very high for a 4-star epic hero. This massive health pool is his greatest asset, allowing him to survive long enough to fire his Average speed skill.

Compared to current benchmarks, his bulk is still competitive, but his attack stat is negligible for tile damage.

Average
  • All allies get +30% defense, and a further 3% increase every time they are hit during 4 turns, up to +54% defense.
  • All allies reflect status ailments and negative stacks for 4 turns. (Status effects cast by characters, Minions and Fiends on the same side cannot be reflected.)
  • Stack (Max: 10): The caster gets +20% attack against the weaker element.

Analysis: Jungle Riposte is a fascinating cocktail of defensive utility.

  1. Scaling Defense Buff: Starting at +30% is standard, but the +3% increase per hit can ramp up quickly against multi-hitters or titan attacks. It forces the enemy to think twice before unleashing a flurry of tiles.
  2. The Double Reflect: This is the headline feature. Reflecting status ailments is great (like Kitty or Goldie), but reflecting Negative Stacks is incredibly rare. This makes him a hard counter to heroes who rely on crushing you with un-cleansable stacks (looking at you, Barbarians and specific season heroes).
  3. Self-Stack: The attack stack for himself against the weaker element (Red) is... odd. Since his special does no damage, this only applies to his tile damage against Red enemies. It's a nice bonus for Titans or mono-teams, but largely irrelevant for his main role.

By the Numbers

Let's look at the math behind the monkey.

  • Mana Speed: Average. He requires 10 tiles to charge (9 with a high-level mana troop). This is his biggest hurdle. In a world of Fast/Very Fast wars, charging an ailment reflector at Average speed can sometimes be too little, too late.
  • Defense Scaling: If hit 5 times (a typical multi-hit slash), the defense buff moves from 30% to 45%. This makes his team significantly tankier as the turn progresses.
  • Passive Damage: His "Hunter's Mark" passive deals 150 damage over 3 turns (50 per turn). It's a nice chip damage, but it won't win fights on its own.
  • Effective Health: With 1402 HP and Paladin class (+25% defense chance), his effective durability is higher than the raw stats suggest.

Family Bonus, Passives, Aether Power & Unique Abilities

The Jungle Hunter family and passives add layers to his kit that are essential for his viability.

Family Bonus

Monster Island - Jungle Hunters
Family Bonus

Monster Island - Jungle Hunters

  • Bonus for 2/3/4/5 Heroes:
  • +5%/+10%/+15%/+20% HP.
  • Event Bonus: Heroes belonging to the Jungle Hunter family receive the following perks on Monster Island:
  • * +40% attack, +40% defense, +40% health

The Jungle Hunter family bonus (bonus for unique heroes) usually provides stats or mana generation. While nice, in a 4-star team, you are unlikely to run a full rainbow of Jungle Hunters, so treat this as a minor perk rather than a build-around feature.

Passives

Inherent Abilities

Passive Skills

  • Hunter's Vigor
When this character casts their Special Skill, they get +20% attack for 3 turns. This effect can be active in addition to other effects that alter attack.
  • Damage over Time on Special
When this character casts their Special Skill, they give a Hunter's Mark on a random enemy. The target receives 150 damage over 3 turns. If a target already has this effect, the duration will be refreshed and the damage will be increased by 150, up to 1500 damage in total.
  • Hunter's Mark: Applies a DoT to a random enemy when casting. 150 damage total. It’s "free" damage, which helps compensate for his non-damaging special.
  • Hunter's Vigor: Grants +20% attack for 3 turns on cast. Again, this tries to push him into a tile-damage role, synergizing with his stack.

Aether Power

Special Armor
Aether Power

Special Armor

At the start of each battle, this Hero gets 40% defense against Special Skills for 6 turns.

In battles with multiple waves, the effect is refreshed at the beginning of each wave.

Special Armor: This is excellent for him. Since he needs to survive to cast his reflect, taking reduced damage from special skills ensures he doesn't get one-shot before he can do his job.

Legacy & Modern Relevance

  • Historical Context: Upon release, Knuckles was viewed as a niche tool. Players recognized the potential of "Reflect Stacks" but struggled to find daily uses for an Average speed support hero who doesn't heal.
  • Power Creep Analysis: His stats have held up reasonably well because they were heavily skewed towards HP. However, the game has sped up. Average speed ailment blockers are risky when enemies like Toon Costume 5-stars or fast hit-all nukers exist.
  • Modern Viability Verdict: Niche but Necessary. He is not a general-purpose hero. You won't bring him to every raid. But in Rush Attack tournaments or wars, or against specific stack-heavy defenses (like Skadi or Lugbrug), he is an absolute MVP. He is a "silver bullet" heroβ€”useless in 80% of fights, but wins the other 20% single-handedly.

Costume & Costume Bonus

This hero currently does not have a costume. This review focuses on the base version.

Emblem Path Analysis

As a Paladin with a support kit, there is only one logical path. You want him to live.

  • Path: Defense > Health > Attack
  • Pros: Maximizes his reflect potential. The longer he lives, the longer your team is immune to ailments. Paladin nodes synergize with high defense.
  • Cons: His tile damage will remain mediocre.

Final Recommendation

Take the Defense/Health path. His attack buffs (stack and passive) are not significant enough to justify sacrificing survivability. He needs to survive to sniper shots to cast his reflect.

Strengths

  • Unique Utility: One of the very few sources of Negative Stack Reflection.
  • Total Ailment Immunity: Reflecting ailments is often better than cleansing them, as it punishes the attacker.
  • High Durability: Massive HP pool for a 4-star.
  • Scaling Defense: Punishes multi-hitters.

Summary: Knuckles is a defensive powerhouse designed to turn the enemy's strength into a weakness. If the enemy relies on DoTs or Stacks, Knuckles shuts them down.

Weaknesses

  • Average Speed: His biggest flaw. By the time he charges, you might already be debuffed.
  • No Healing: He protects from future damage/ailments but does nothing to recover lost HP.
  • Passive Playstyle: He doesn't kill the enemy directly. You need to bring other hitters to actually win the match.
  • Niche Stacking: His self-attack stack is largely wasted on a support hero.

Summary: He requires a specific team composition (usually a healer and a heavy hitter) to function. He cannot carry a team on his own.

Best Game Modes

  • Rush Attack Tournaments/Wars: This is his playground. At Very Fast speed, he can get his reflection up before enemies fire, neutering heroes like Alfrike or heavy DoT casters.
  • Bloody Battle: Since he prevents damage via defense buff and reflect (and healing isn't allowed anyway), his lack of healing is not a drawback here.
  • 4-Star Buff Booster: Every time he is hit, he gains a defense buff (stats change), which counts as a buff for the tournament rules. Plus, he provides a defense buff to everyone.

Advanced Strategy & Team Compositions

Knuckles is a "Reactionary" hero. You bring him when you see a specific threat.

Sample Team Ideas

  1. The "No-U" 4-Star Defense:
    • Team: Knuckles - Boldtusk - Cyprian - Kiril - Caedmon
    • Concept: A highly defensive team. Cyprian reflects damage, Knuckles reflects ailments. It forces the enemy to kill themselves on your shields.
  2. The Anti-Skadi / Anti-Stack:
    • Team: Knuckles + Minion Summoners
    • Concept: Usually, minion summoners are weak to Skadi (who stacks mana gen reduction per minion killed). Knuckles reflects that stack, completely reversing the counter.

Counters & Anti-Synergies

  • Dispellers: Knuckles' buffs are dispellable. A fast dispeller like Sabina or Caedmon can wipe his protection instantly.
  • Raw Damage Nukers: He does not reflect direct damage (only ailments). A hero like Septimus or Colen who just hits hard will ignore the reflect (though the defense buff helps).

Advice for New Players

If you pull Knuckles early, he is a safe investment, but don't prioritize him over a solid healer (like Kiril) or a sniper (like Grimm). Level him up once you have your core team and need a specialist for wars.

Advice for Veterans

You likely have 5-star options like Kitty or Goldie for ailment reflection. However, Knuckles is still the king of 4-star tournaments. Keep one leveled and emblemed for 4-star Rush and Bloody Battle weeks. There is no need for a second copy unless you are extremely competitive in 4-star wars. Do not Limit Break him a second time (Alpha Aethers) unless you use him in your main war defense; his base stats are fine for his niche.

Community Corner: Hot Takes & History

The community reaction to Knuckles was mixed but hopeful.

  • The Skadi Slayer: One user pointed out his specific niche: "He will shine vs Skadi in minion wars. All allies reflect negative stacks. I haven’t seen stacks reflected before."
  • The "Food" Accusation: As always, some were unimpressed: "Sounds like food for Snow White to me!"
  • The Rush Meta: Many correctly identified his home: "I only use him in rush against Alfrike tanks. I don’t think he does enough otherwise."

Historically, he hasn't broken the game, but he has saved many players from the frustration of permanent stack ailments.

Final Thoughts

Knuckles is the definition of a "tool" hero. You don't buy a hammer to brush your teeth, and you don't bring Knuckles to a tile-damage fight. But when you need to hammer a nail (or reflect a nasty stack of poison), he is the best tool in the box. While his stats are aging and his speed is average, his unique ability to reflect stacks ensures he will have a seat at the tableβ€”especially the 4-star tableβ€”for a long time.

Verdict: A solid Keeper for tournaments and specific counters. Don't go bananas summoning for him, but if you have him, treat him well.
