Max, The Storytelling Shepherd: Big Heals, Beefy Puppies, and a New Name
Overview
Max, a 5-star Nature hero from the Mighty Pets family, is a bit of a celebrityβmostly because he had to change his name to avoid a lawsuit from a certain Wizard. Originally introduced as "Toto" in late 2022, this slow-speed Druid is a classic support tank designed to keep your team alive through sheer volume of health and minions. While he lacks the flashy speed of modern heroes, he compensates with some of the beefiest minions in the game.
Note: This review focuses on the base version of Max.

Hero Art & Visuals
Max is depicted as a wise, perhaps slightly grumpy, Schnauzer-esque canine standing on two legs. Dressed in druidic robes adorned with leaves and carrying a wooden staff that sprouts yellow flowers, he looks like he's about to lecture you on the importance of recycling. The art style fits the whimsical yet slightly odd aesthetic of the Mighty Pets family perfectly. Itβs a definite upgrade from "just a dog in a basket," giving him a character that feels like a protector of the forestβor at least the protector of his own backyard.

Hero Stats
Base Stats (No Emblems)
| Level | Attack | Defense | Health | πͺPower |
|---|---|---|---|---|
4/80 | 836 | 867 | 1540 | 875 |
4/85lb1 | 901 | 934 | 1660 | 934 |
4/90lb2 | 1031 | 1069 | 1899 | 1051 |
Looking at the raw numbers, Max shows his age. With a base power of around 875 (and significantly lower stats than the 1300+ behemoths released in 2025/2026), he is statistically behind the curve. His defense and health were considered tank-worthy in 2022, but today they are merely "decent." However, because his primary value comes from percentage-based healing and minion stats, he scales surprisingly well with Limit Breaks and Emblems. You need to invest heavily in his stats to make his minions survive modern AoE hits.
Special Skill: Puppy Tales

Puppy Tales
- Recovers 45% health for all allies.
- Summons a Brown Puppy Minion for each ally with 35% HP and 55% attack inherited from the caster.
- All allies reduce all received damage from the attacks and special skills of the stronger enemy by -80% for 5 turns.
Analysis: "Puppy Tales" is a slow skill that tries to do three things at once, and it succeeds wildly at two of them.
- 45% Heal: This is a substantial chunk of health, enough to bring a dying team back into the fight.
- The Minions: This is the main event. A minion with 35% HP and 55% Attack is effectively a hefty meat shield that bites back hard. Most minions hover around 10-20% HP; Max's puppies are practically half a hero.
- Damage Reduction: The -80% damage reduction from the stronger element (Fire) is incredibly niche. Itβs a mechanic designed to punish mono-red attackers or red snipers, but against a rainbow defense or non-red teams, it does literally nothing. It's a nice bonus when it works, but don't build your strategy around it.
By the Numbers
Let's break down why those puppies are scary.
- Mana Speed: Slow (12 tiles). With a lvl 29 Magic/Styx troop and his 5% passive mana boost, you can shave this down, but he will rarely keep pace with Very Fast heroes.
- Minion Stats (Estimated): If you get Max to ~1800 HP and ~1000 Attack (LB1 + Emblems):
- Puppy HP: ~630 HP (This is higher than some 3-star heroes!)
- Puppy Attack: ~550 Attack (This hits harder than many slash attacks).
- Healing: ~810 HP recovered per ally (based on 1800 Max HP).
- Effective Health Swing: Between the direct heal and the minion meat shield, Max effectively gives each ally ~1400+ HP worth of survivability. That is massive.
Family Bonus, Passives, Aether Power & Unique Abilities
The Mighty Pets family brings some very interesting mechanics that reward minion play.
Family Bonus

Challenge Festival II - Pets
- Bonus for 1/2/3 Heroes:
- Fiends for this Hero absorb -2%/-3%/-4% less max health.
- Fiends for this Hero inherit -2%/-3%/-4% less attack.
- Minions for this Hero inherit +2%/+3%/+4% extra attack.
- Minions for this Hero inherit +2%/+3%/+4% extra health.
- The members of this family have additional perks in the Challenge Festival events.
The bonus boosts minion stats further. Since Max already summons the strongest minions, this is just icing on the cake. If you pair him with another pet like Bubbles or Furdinand, those puppies become even more terrifying.
Passives
Passive Skills
Wrath of PetsWhen a Fiend is summoned to any enemy, this character deals 85% damage to all enemies. This effect can activate only once per turn.
Friend of the FamiliarsWhen a Minion is summoned to any ally, this character gains 5% health and 5% mana. This effect can activate only once per turn.
- Friend of the Familiars: This is crucial. Gaining 5% mana every time any ally gets a minion means Max can charge significantly faster if paired with fast minion summoners (like Devana, Motega, or Bera).
- Wrath of Pets: Dealing 85% damage to all enemies when a Fiend is summoned is a funny "take that" to fiend meta heroes, but less reliable to trigger unless you are fighting specific defenses.
Aether Power

Defense Up
At the start of each battle, this Hero gets 20% defense for 6 turns.
Defense Up is the perfect Aether Power for a Slow hero. It helps ensure he survives long enough to fire his skill at least once.
Legacy & Modern Relevance
- Historical Context: Upon release, "Toto" was seen as a solid but slow healer who suffered from comparison to Cleopatra. He was good, but not "meta-breaking" outside of Minion Wars.
- Power Creep Analysis: Max has been heavily power-crept in terms of raw stats and speed. Modern healers often cleanse, boost health, or buff attack at Average speed. Max's Slow speed is a major liability in an era of 6-tile kills.
- Modern Viability Verdict: Niche Viability. Max is not a top-tier defense hero anymore. However, he is a Rush Attack superstar and a PvE monster. In modes where speed is equalized or irrelevant (Towers, Map Stages), his massive sustain is still top-class.
Emblem Path Analysis
Max needs to survive. His entire kit revolves on him casting that one big spell to reset the board state.
The Guardian Shepherd
- Path: Defense > Health > Attack
- Pros: Maximizes survivability, ensuring he lives to fire. Increases the HP of his minions (since it's % based).
- Cons: Lowers the attack of the minions slightly.
The Rabid Dog
- Path: Attack > Defense > Health
- Pros: Max's minions inherit 55% attack. Boosting his attack makes the minions hit incredibly hard.
- Cons: He might die before he casts.
Final Recommendation
For most players, the Defense/Health path is recommended. A dead Max summons zero puppies. The minions already hit hard enough by default; prioritize keeping the summoner alive.
Strengths
- Minion Quality: The 35% HP / 55% Attack stats are among the best in the game.
- Passive Mana Generation: Can charge faster than "Slow" suggests if paired correctly.
- Anti-Red Tech: Makes your team nearly invincible against Red tile damage and specials.
Weaknesses
- Slow Speed: 12 tiles is an eternity in modern E&P.
- Dispel/Minion Removal: He is hard-countered by heroes like Grimble, Topaz, or Eloise who eat minions for breakfast.
- Niche Secondary Effect: The damage reduction is useless against 4 out of 5 elements.
- Outdated Stats: Low base defense makes him squishy without Limit Breaks.
Best Game Modes
- Rush Attack Tournaments/Wars: This is his home. At Very Fast speed, he is a nightmare to deal with.
- Tower Events: The massive minion HP acts as a buffer against permanent damage (curses).
- Map/Quest Farming: His minions can essentially solo waves of enemies.
Advanced Strategy & Team Compositions
Max shouldn't be your only healer in a standard raid, but he can be the anchor of a "Minion Spam" team.
Sample Team Ideas
- The Zoo: Freya - Max - Pengi. Freya boosts minion attack, Max summons beefy minions, and Pengi fires a machine gun based on minion count. Max's passive mana gain triggers constantly here.
- The Anti-Rush Defense: Ludwig (Tank) - Max (Flank). If Ludwig fires, Max gets full mana, makes the team unkillable, and summons an army.
Counters & Anti-Synergies
- Minion Destroyers: Grimble, Goretooth, Ogima, and Alucard destroy his value instantly.
- Lunar New Year Heroes: Heroes like Laohu disable minion effects or punish them heavily.
- Silence/Mana Control: Stops him from ever firing.
Advice for New Players
If you pulled Max early, congratulations! He will carry you through World 1 and 2 easily. His minions are stronger than your other heroes. Level him up, but be aware he might feel "slow" in raids.
Advice for Veterans
Max is a luxury toy. If you have the mats and love Minion Wars or Rush, he's worth it. If you are looking for a primary war healer, there are better, faster options. Do not LB2 him unless you use him in your primary Rush Defense.
Community Corner: Hot Takes & History
The community has a love-hate relationship with this dog.
- The Name Change: Players were baffled when "Toto" became "Max." One player joked, "Sir Woofenstein would have been a better name... Max... lame."
- The Speed Debate: From day one, the consensus was "He should be average speed." Many compared him unfavorably to Cleopatra.
- The "Niche" Defense: Players realized early on that his -80% damage reduction was "A bit too niche... The perfect counter to Khufu, but useless otherwise."
Final Thoughts
Max is a hero out of time. His minions are legendary, but his speed is a relic. He is the goodest boy who tries his best, and when he works, he is spectacularβfilling the screen with puppies that bite like wolves. But in a world of hypersonic ninjas and goblins, Max is often still putting on his shoes when the race is already over.
Verdict: A situational king for Rush and Minion lovers, but a bench-warmer for the general meta.
