Santa Claus: Delivering Coal to the Enemy Defense?
Overview
Santa Claus is the iconic face of the Santa's Challenge seasonal event, a 5-star Legendary Fire hero who has been squeezing down chimneys since the early days of Empires & Puzzles. Originally feared as a formidable tank, Father Christmas brings a bag full of minions and debilitating debuffs to the battlefield. This review focuses on his base form, a Slow mana Monk who tries to control the board by crippling the enemy team's offense and defense simultaneously. While he may be jolly, his age is starting to show in a world of hyper-speed ninjas and gods.

Hero Art & Visuals
The artwork captures the classic, Coca-Cola style Santa Claus. He is rotund, bearded, and jolly, holding a massive sack of gifts that likely contains more coal than presents for your opponents. It is a very traditional, comforting design that stands in stark contrast to the edgy, armored warriors that dominate the game today. Compared to his "Rock Star" costume, this version is much more wholesome, though perhaps less ready to mosh pit.

Hero Stats
Base Stats (No Costume Bonus)
| Level | Attack | Defense | Health | πͺPower |
|---|---|---|---|---|
4/80 | 618 | 830 | 1437 | 774 |
4/85lb1 | 666 | 894 | 1549 | 825 |
4/90lb2 | 762 | 1023 | 1772 | 926 |
To put it bluntly, Santa's stats are a blast from the past. With a base attack of 618, he hits with the force of a wet noodle compared to modern attackers who regularly exceed 1300. His defense (830) and health (1437) were once considered tank-worthy, but in the current meta where heroes boast 1300+ defense and 2200+ health, he is surprisingly squishy. He relies heavily on his defensive debuffs and minions to survive, as his raw stats won't save him from a modern sniper.
Special Skill: Ultimate Gift Sack

Ultimate Gift Sack
- Deals 200% damage to all enemies.
- Summons an Elf Minion for each ally with 10% HP and 10% attack inherited from the caster.
- All enemies get -34% attack for 3 turns.
- All enemies get -44% defense for 3 turns.
The Ultimate Gift Sack is a "kitchen sink" skill that tries to do a bit of everything.
- Damage: It deals 200% damage to all enemies. While this was buffed from an even lower original value, 200% off a 618 attack stat is negligible damage in today's game. It is mostly there to tickle the enemy.
- Minions: He summons an Elf Minion for each ally with 10% HP and 10% attack. These act as a small meat shield, providing a buffer of health for your team.
- Debuffs: The real meat of the skill is the -34% attack and -44% defense for 3 turns. This combination softens up the enemy team significantly while reducing their ability to hurt you back.
The primary issue is the Slow mana speed. Waiting for 12 tiles to fire off a skill that deals low damage and applies 3-turn debuffs is a hard sell when Average speed heroes can do more with less work.
By the Numbers
- Mana Speed: Slow (12 tiles). With the Monk class, he can resist mana ailments, which helps slightly in ensuring he eventually fires.
- Damage Calculation: 618 Attack x 200% = ~1236 raw damage output per enemy (before defense reduction). Against modern defenses, this will likely result in triple-digit damage at best.
- Support: The minions add roughly 140-150 HP per ally (10% of ~1437 HP). A full team gets ~700-750 total HP buffer.
- Debuff Impact: -44% defense is substantial, increasing all subsequent tile and special skill damage by a large margin.
Family Bonus, Passives, Aether Power & Unique Abilities
The Winter family bonus is all about minions, which fits Santa's kit perfectly.
Family Bonus

Monthly Event - Winter
- Bonus for 2/3 Unique Heroes:
- +2%/ +3% health for Minions inherited from their summoner.
- +5%/+10% attack for Minions inherited from their summoner.
- The members of this family have additional perks in the Santa's Challenge event.
The Winter Family bonus boosts the health and attack of minions summoned by family members. If you pair Santa with other Winter heroes (like Mother North or Krampus), his Elf minions become significantly beefier. This is essential because 10% base HP minions vanish instantly against modern AoE attacks.
Passives
No passives found
(Note: Base Santa Claus generally does not have the modern passives seen on newer event heroes unless updated recently, and his file primarily lists the family bonus. He relies on his class talent.)
Aether Power

Mana Boost
At the start of each battle, this Hero receives a small amount of mana over 6 turns.
Mana Boost is a solid choice for a Slow hero. Starting with a chunk of mana helps mitigate his greatest weakness, potentially allowing him to fire in 9 or 10 tiles instead of 12 with the right troops.
Legacy & Modern Relevance
- Historical Context: In 2018 and 2019, Santa was a top-tier tank. His high defense (for the time) and ability to cripple the entire enemy team made him a nightmare to face. He was the king of attrition wars.
- Power Creep Analysis: Power creep has not been kind to Father Christmas. His stats are now 4-star level. His damage is irrelevant. Even his minions are easily swept away by lunar passives and anti-minion specialists.
- Modern Viability Verdict: Bench / Niche. He is no longer viable in standard Diamond arena raids or wars. His only remaining use cases are Rush Attack tournaments/wars (where his speed is fixed) and as a defense-down support for Titans if you lack better options.
Costume & Costume Bonus
This review focuses on the base hero, but the Costume is generally considered the superior version for one specific reason: the Defense Down.
- Base: -44% Defense, -34% Attack.
- Costume: -54% Defense, -24% Attack. The Costume sacrifices some attack reduction for a massive -54% defense down, which is one of the highest values in the game. For Titans and pure damage amplification, the Costume wins. However, the Base form's -34% Attack reduction is better for team survival if you are struggling to stay alive. The Costume also boasts slightly better stats and a different class (Sorcerer).
Emblem Path Analysis
Since Santa is primarily a support tank/flank, you want him to survive long enough to fire his skill.
The Survivor (Recommended)
- Path: Defense > Health > Attack
- Pros: Maximizes his survivability. His base defense is decent, so scaling it makes him tougher.
- Cons: His attack stat becomes even more irrelevant.
Final Recommendation
For most players, the Defense/Health path is recommended. Do not waste nodes on Attack; he is not a damage dealer.
Strengths
- Dual Debuff: Applying both Attack and Defense down to all enemies is a potent combination for swinging momentum.
- Minion Support: Provides a layer of protection for the whole team.
- Rush Attack King: In Very Fast modes, his slow speed is negated, making his powerful skill devastating.
Weaknesses
- Abysmal Speed: Slow mana is a death sentence in the current fast-paced meta.
- Outdated Stats: He dies too quickly to utilize his bulk.
- Low Damage: He applies no offensive pressure on his own.
- Short Duration: 3 turns for his debuffs is very short for a Slow hero; often the effect wears off before you can capitalize on it.
Best Game Modes
- Rush Attack (Wars/Tournaments): This is his home. When he charges in 6 tiles, he controls the board effectively.
- Map/PvE: His minions and control are great for keeping your team alive through long map stages.
- Titans: Defense down is always valuable, though his attack stat hurts the tile damage.
Advanced Strategy & Team Compositions
Santa works best when he is the setup man for faster, harder-hitting heroes.
Sample Team Ideas
- The Christmas Family: Mother North - Santa Claus - Krampus. The family bonus makes the minions incredibly tanky, creating a wall of health.
- The Burn & Turn: Santa Claus - Colen (or any AoE hitter). Santa strips defense, and the followup hitter wipes the board.
Counters & Anti-Synergies
- Grimble/Gobbler/Captain of Diamonds: Minion destroyers love seeing Santa, as he gives them free food/mana.
- Cleansers: Rigard or any cleanser completely nullifies Santa's turn. Since he is Slow, it is easy to have a cleanser ready by the time he fires.
Advice for New Players
If you pull Santa early in your Empires & Puzzles journey, he is a fantastic asset. His minions will keep your under-leveled team alive, and his defense down will help you crush map bosses. Level him up, but be wary of over-investing in emblems once you start facing stronger opponents.
Advice for Veterans
Santa is likely collecting dust on your bench unless it is Rush week. Do not Limit Break him unless you use him religiously in Rush Wars. The resources are better spent on modern heroes with relevant stats. If you have the Costume, focus on that version for the superior defense down on Titans.
Community Corner: Hot Takes & History
Historically, Santa was seen as a "must-have" for his unique utility. One user noted, "Santa Claus is a good hero... he's awesome, he's probably worth leveling up but he's not in the top tier", which was true years ago and is even more true now. Another player mentioned preferring him over Wilbur for Titans due to the minions keeping the team alive, sparking a debate on survival vs. pure damage. The general consensus remains: "Santa only shines in rush attacks."
Final Thoughts
Santa Claus is a nostalgic hero who reminds us of a simpler time in Empires & Puzzles. While his base form has been left behind by the power creep sleigh, he can still bring joy in Rush tournaments or to new players needing a sturdy red tank. He might not be the gift you put at the top of your list anymore, but he is certainly better than a lump of coal.
Verdict: A situational hero for Rush modes and PvE survival, but severely outdated for competitive play.
