Väinämöinen: The Old Bard Singing A Slow, Fading Song
Overview
Väinämöinen, the Eternal Bard of the Kalevala family, strummed his way into Empires & Puzzles back in the summer of 2022. As a Fast speed Nature Sorcerer, his role was simple: hit three enemies and make the whole enemy team miss. He was designed to be a disruptor, a "green Dr. Moreau" if you will. While he was once a respectable flank, the relentless march of power creep has been unkind to his kantele. This review focuses on his base form, comparing it to his more modern costume.

Hero Art & Visuals
Väinämöinen sports a classic "wizard of the woods" look—a magnificent white beard that would make Santa jealous, a traditional kantele in hand, and a gaze that says, "I've seen empires rise and fall, and I'm tired." It's a very grounded, mythological design compared to the neon-soaked cyberpunk constructs we see today. The art screams wisdom, but unfortunately, wisdom doesn't block 1500 damage snipers.

Hero Stats
Base Stats (No Costume Bonus)
| Level | Attack | Defense | Health | 💪Power |
|---|---|---|---|---|
4/80 | 799 | 807 | 1481 | 837 |
4/85lb1 | 861 | 870 | 1596 | 893 |
4/90lb2 | 985 | 995 | 1826 | 1003 |
Let's not sugarcoat it: by 2026 standards, base Väinämöinen's stats are severely outdated. With around 800 Attack and Defense and under 1500 Health, he is paper-thin compared to modern heroes who regularly boast 1300+ Attack/Defense and 2400+ Health. Without his costume bonus or Limit Breaks, he will struggle to survive a single hit from a modern sniper, let alone a full special skill barrage. He is a relic of a simpler time.
Special Skill: Song of the Morass

Song of the Morass
- Deals 270% damage to the target and nearby enemies.
- All enemies get -30% accuracy for 3 turns. Against Fire characters, this status effect becomes uncleansable and lasts 2 turns longer. Chance to miss also applies to offensive Special Skills.
Analysis: The "Song of the Morass" is a straightforward utility skill.
- Damage: 270% to three targets is incredibly low in the current meta. For comparison, modern Hit-3 heroes are pushing 400-500% damage with additional status ailments. This damage is essentially a "scratch" on modern defensive stats.
- Accuracy Debuff: This is the meat of the skill. A -30% accuracy debuff to all enemies is still a potent mechanic. It disrupts combos and can save your team from a wipe. It's particularly effective against Fire heroes, where it becomes uncleansable and lasts longer. However, 30% is a bit of a gamble—it's not high enough to be reliable, but annoying enough to be useful.
By the Numbers
- Mana Speed Analysis: As a Fast hero, he charges in 8 tiles. With a level 23 Mana Troop (or equivalent mana bonuses), he can drop to 7 tiles. This speed is his saving grace, allowing him to fire his blind before slower, heavier hitters.
- Damage Calculation: With ~800 attack, a 270% hit deals roughly 2160 raw damage (before defense mitigation). Against a modern hero with 1300 defense, this might result in only 200-300 actual damage per target. It's negligible.
- Key Passives Impact: The Power of Sisu (heal/mana on low health) essentially gives him a second wind, effectively extending his HP pool by 15% once per battle.
Family Bonus, Passives, Aether Power & Unique Abilities
Family Bonus

Monthly Event - Kalevala
- Bonus for 1/2/3 Unique Heroes:
- Receive -10%/-25%/-40% less damage from the Special Skills of the stronger element.
- The members of this family have additional perks in the Kalevala event.
The Kalevala family bonus offers damage reduction from the stronger element (Fire). While nice, a 10% reduction (for 1 hero) isn't enough to save him from a modern Marjana or Khufu.
Passives
Passive Skills
Power of SisuWhen this character starts a turn with low health for the first time during a battle, they recover 15% health and receive 15% mana.
Power of Sisu is excellent. Recovering 15% Health and Mana when dropping to low health can disrupt the enemy's kill calculation and potentially allow him to fire one last desperate blind. It's one of the best survival passives in the game, even if the body holding it is weak.
Aether Power

Attack Up
At the start of each battle, this Hero gets 20% attack for 6 turns
Attack Up is generally good, but on a hero with such low base damage and low skill percentage, it feels wasted. A defensive power would have helped him stay alive longer to keep applying the blind.
Legacy & Modern Relevance
- Historical Context: Upon release, Väinämöinen was considered "decent but boring." He was a solid utility hero who could slot into defense teams to annoy attackers with misses.
- Power Creep Analysis: He has been completely eclipsed. His damage is non-existent by modern standards, and his stats make him a liability.
- Modern Viability Verdict: Bench. In top-tier competitive play, base Väinämöinen is unusable. He dies too quickly and doesn't do enough impact. His only niche is perhaps in very deep War rosters or specifically for the accuracy debuff if you lack other options, but even then, you're playing a risky game.
Costume & Costume Bonus
Comparison to Costume: The costume, Eternal Sage, is a mandatory upgrade.
- Stats: The costume brings his stats up to a "usable" (though not top-tier) level, pushing HP near 2000.
- Skill: The costume deals 300% damage (up from 270%) but actually lowers the accuracy debuff to -25% (down from -30%).
- Class: Changes from Sorcerer to Wizard.
- Verdict: You wear the costume for the stats. The drop in blind percentage is a sad trade-off, but the base hero simply cannot survive long enough to use his slightly better blind. If you have the costume, level it for the stat bonus, but you might ironically find the base version's special skill slightly more annoying—if you can keep him alive.
Emblem Path Analysis
If you insist on using the base version (perhaps you don't have the costume?), survival is your only priority.
The Survivor
- Path: Defense > Health > Attack
- Pros: Maximizes his low stats to help him survive hit-3 snipers. Increases the value of the Sisu passive (15% of a larger HP pool).
- Cons: His damage becomes even more laughable.
Final Recommendation
Go Defense/Health. His damage is irrelevant; his job is to cast the accuracy debuff. He needs to live to sing.
Strengths
- Fast Speed Blind: Hitting all enemies with an accuracy debuff at Fast speed is decent utility.
- Sisu Passive: One of the best survival passives, giving him a "cheat death" mechanic.
- Anti-Fire Niche: Uncleansable blind on Fire enemies can neuter dangerous red hitters.
Weaknesses
- Abysmal Stats: Base stats are ancient and crumble under modern damage.
- Low Damage: 270% damage to 3 is basically a tickle in 2026.
- RNG Dependent: 30% miss chance is not reliable enough to build a strategy around.
Best Game Modes
- Farming: Fast animation and hits 3.
- Deep War Depth: If you are scraping the bottom of the barrel for a 6th war team against a heavy red tank.
Advanced Strategy & Team Compositions
If you use him, pair him with heroes who can capitalize on the stall tactics.
Sample Team Ideas
- The "Can't Touch This" Team: Pair with C. Kadilen or other dodge heroes. The combination of Dodge + Blind creates two layers of RNG that enemies have to pass to hit you.
- Green Stack: Use with Evelyn or Almur (EDD) -> Väinämöinen -> A modern hitter. He acts as the softener and protector.
Counters & Anti-Synergies
- Cleanse: Any monk or cleanser wipes his main utility (unless against Fire).
- Sure Shot: Heroes with "Never Miss" (like the new Astral or Hunter heroes) completely ignore his blind.
- Passive Blockers: Heroes that block passive skill activation stop his Sisu survival mechanic.
Advice for New Players
If you pull him early, he's a great 5-star for a new roster. His blind will save you in map stages and early raids. Level him, but be wary of spending Limit Break materials unless you have his costume.
Advice for Veterans
He is Soul Exchange fodder without the costume. With the costume, he's a depth piece. Don't waste Alpha Aethers here; save them for heroes who can actually impact the board.
Community Corner: Hot Takes & History
The community was never overly hyped about him.
- "He’d be just about ok about 3 years ago…" - A prophetic forum user from his release era.
- "Green Dr. Moreau. Nothing worth considering."
- "His power level is 112 pts below Ukkonen…why not bump his power… no one wants this guy."
- One user noted the synergy: "I can see this guy paired with C-Kadilen, fast blind+dodge." - This remains his only real viable strategy.
Final Thoughts
Väinämöinen is a hero out of time. His base form is a nostalgic reminder of when 270% damage was considered "okay." Today, he's an elderly bard trying to play acoustic guitar at a heavy metal concert. He might get a few notes in, but he's mostly just going to get mosh-pitted into oblivion.
Final Verdict: Bench (without costume) / Depth (with costume).
