Vonreine: The Fiery Gargoyle Who Steals Mana and Hearts (Literally)

Overview

Meet Vonreine, the three-eyed, fire-breathing Gargoyle who proved that sometimes, the 4-star warm-up act is better than the 5-star headliner. Released in late 2024 alongside the underwhelming Vincent, Vonreine quickly established himself as a tactical menace. He is an Epic Fire hero from the Gargoyle family, specializing in a unique form of mana control that punishes enemies for simply playing the game. With his innate Stoneskin and ability to shut down healing, he remains a staple in tournament defenses.

Vonreine

Hero Art & Visuals

Vonreine sports a mischievous, almost manic design that stands out from the stony seriousness of his Gargoyle brethren. He features bright blue and orange coloring, three expressive eyes, and horns that give him a "little devil" appearance. Unlike the terrifying Ghealach or the stoic Gaillard, Vonreine looks like he's about to pull a prank on youβ€”specifically, the prank of stealing your mana right before you cast your special.

Stat Analysis: Looking at Vonreine through the lens of early 2026, his stats show his age. With a base power of 702 and stats hovering around 707 Attack and 680 Defense, he is significantly behind the modern "Construct" and "Beowulf" 4-star families, which push 800+ power and 1500+ HP. While he was considered tanky upon release, he is now squishy by modern standards. He relies entirely on his Stoneskin passive to survive against the high-damage snipers of the current meta.

Mana Speed
Average
  • Deals 285% damage to the target and nearby enemies.
  • Summons a Fire Wisp Fiend to the target and nearby enemies.
  • The Fire Wisp Fiend absorbs healing. It disappears after absorbing a healing amount equal to 35% of its target's max health.
  • The caster steals 30% of the generated mana from the target and nearby enemies. This effect lasts as long as the target has Fire Wish Fiends. This effect can't be cleansed, but gets removed if the caster is defeated.

Skill Analysis: This skill is a multi-layered control tool. First, it deals respectable damage to three targets. Second, and most importantly, it summons a Fire Wisp Fiend. The magic lies in the secondary effect: Mana Steal. Unlike Onatel or other mana thieves, this effect is tied to the Fiend. As long as that Fiend is attached to the enemy, Vonreine steals 30% of any mana they generate. This creates a vicious cycle: the enemy struggles to charge their healers to remove the fiend because their mana is being siphoned, while Vonreine charges faster to fire again and refresh the fiends.

By the Numbers

Let's break down the math behind the madness.

  • Mana Speed: Average. He requires 10 tiles to charge. With a level 23 Mana Troop, this drops to 9 tiles.
  • Damage Potential: 285% damage to 3 targets. With ~770 Attack (LB1), that's a solid hit, though not a one-shot killer in today's meta.
  • Fiend Health: The fiend absorbs healing equal to 35% of the target's max HP. Against a modern 4-star with 1500 HP, that's a 525 HP shield that must be healed off.
  • Mana Math: If an enemy gains 100% of a tile's mana worth, they only keep 70%, and Vonreine gets the other 30%. This is "Generated Mana," meaning it applies to tiles and special skills that give mana.

Family Bonus, Passives, Aether Power & Unique Abilities

Vonreine's kit is heavily bolstered by the Gargoyle family traits, which are arguably some of the best defensive passives in the game.

Family Bonus

Family Bonus

Challenge - Gargoyle

  • Bonus for 1/2/3/ Unique Heroes:
  • Immune to Poison damage / Immune to Poison and Burn damage / Immune to Poison, Burn and Water damage
  • The members of this family have additional perks in the Return to Sanctuary event.

The immunity to Poison, Burn, and Water damage is situational but clutch. In 4-star tournaments where heroes like Colen or Proteus (poison) are rampant, this immunity can completely negate an enemy's win condition.

Passives

Passive Icon
Inherent Abilities

Passive Skills

  • Gargoyle's Softskin
Every time this Gargoyle casts a Special Skill, their Softskin activates. The next 4 times they receive damage, it is reduced by -90%. They are also immune to all status ailments, mana reductions and Insanity. This effect can't be dispelled.

Gargoyle's Stoneskin is the reason Vonreine is still relevant in 2026 despite his lower stats. Dropping damage to 1 (or close to it) for 4 hits is incredible mitigation. Since he is Average speed, the Stoneskin lasts 4 turns. If he fires continuously, he can maintain near-permanent uptime on this damage reduction, making him incredibly annoying to kill with tiles or direct damage.

Aether Power

Fiend Resist
Aether Power

Fiend Resist

At the start of each battle, this Hero is immune to new Fiends for 6 turns.

In battles with multiple waves, the effect is refreshed at the beginning of each wave.

Fiend Resist is his Alpha Aether power. This is... okay. It prevents him from being bogged down by enemy fiends, ensuring he can receive healing, but it's not a game-changer like Taunt or Dodge. It's a defensive utility that helps him survive long enough to fire.

Legacy & Modern Relevance

  • Historical Context: Upon release in late 2024, Vonreine was immediately identified as the "hidden gem" of his portal, overshadowing the 5-star Vincent. He brought a mechanic (continuous mana steal via fiend) that was rare at the 4-star level.
  • Power Creep Analysis: By 2026, raw stats have left him behind. Heroes from the Construct family hit harder and survive longer naturally. However, mechanics do not age as fast as stats. A 30% mana steal is effective whether the enemy has 1000 HP or 3000 HP.
  • Modern Viability Verdict: Viable in Niche Modes. He is no longer a plug-and-play hero for general raiding, but he remains an S-Tier pick for Bloody Battle (where fiends cannot be healed off) and Rush Attack (where he charges in 6 tiles and keeps Stoneskin active constantly).

Costume & Costume Bonus

Comparison Note: As of this writing, Vonreine does not have a costume. This review focuses on his base form. If a costume were released, it would likely need to address his base stats to bring them up to 2026 standards.

Emblem Path Analysis

Vonreine is a Monk, which gives him a chance to resist status ailmentsβ€”another layer of defense.

  • Path: Defense > Health > Attack
  • Pros: His primary role is control, not nuking. He needs to survive long enough to fire his skill and activate Stoneskin. Given his outdated stats, every point of Defense helps.
  • Cons: His 285% hit will feel softer, more like a "tickle" against limit-broken enemies.

The Striker

  • Path: Attack > Defense > Health
  • Pros: Maximizes the damage of his initial hit. Useful if you are using him as a finisher.
  • Cons: He becomes very fragile when Stoneskin is down.

Final Recommendation

For most players, the Survivor (Defense/Health) path is recommended. You bring Vonreine to steal mana and block healing; the damage is just a bonus. Keep him alive to keep the misery going.

Strengths

  • Mana Control Loop: Stealing generated mana disrupts enemy timing and accelerates Vonreine, allowing for a snowball effect.
  • Stoneskin Durability: The -90% damage reduction allows him to tank hits that would obliterate newer, stat-heavy heroes.
  • Healing Denial: Large fiends (35% HP) act as a massive overheal barrier, forcing enemies to waste turns healing just to remove the parasite.
  • DoT Immunity: Family bonus grants immunity to common DOTs like Burn and Poison.

Weaknesses

  • Outdated Stats: His base Defense and Health are low for the 2026 meta, making him vulnerable to one-shots if Stoneskin isn't active.
  • Healer Dependency: His fiends are removed by healing. In standard War or Raid formats (non-Bloody), a strong healer like Goldie or a rigard can undo his work quickly.
  • Dispellers: While Stoneskin resists ailments, it doesn't stop direct dispels from heroes like Sabina or Melendor (if they survive the hit).

Best Game Modes

  • Bloody Battle Tournaments: God Tier. Since enemies cannot heal, the Fire Wisp Fiend stays forever (or until Vonreine dies). This means the 30% mana steal is permanent for the match.
  • Rush Attack Tournaments: Excellent. He fires in 6 tiles, applying mana control early and refreshing his Stoneskin frequently.
  • Buff Booster: Good. Stoneskin counts as a buff, contributing to the attack boost.

Advanced Strategy & Team Compositions

Vonreine shines in "Death by a Thousand Cuts" teams where the goal is to grind the enemy down while denying them the ability to retaliate.

Sample Team Ideas

  • The "Stop Hitting Yourself" 4-Star Defense:
    • Formation: Double (M)
    • Heroes: Goldie - Vonreine - Waddles - Vonreine - Azmia
    • Concept: Goldie reflects ailments, Azmia counterattacks, Waddles blocks specials, and double Vonreines steal all the mana.
  • The Bloody Battle Offense:
    • Heroes: Buster - Vonreine - Tetisheri (5*) or Colen (4*)
    • Concept: Use Buster to increase damage taken, then Vonreine to lock down their mana while your slow hitters charge up.

Counters & Anti-Synergies

  • Counters:
    • Minion/Fiend Destroyers: Heroes like Gefjon or Alucard who can destroy fiends instantly bypass the healing requirement.
    • Passives preventing Fiends: Lunar heroes or specific seasonal heroes who resist fiends completely neutralize his kit.
  • Anti-Synergies:
    • Mana Cutters (sometimes): If you use a hero like Li Xiu to cut mana to zero, there is no mana for Vonreine to steal. They work okay together, but they don't maximize his "steal" potential.

Advice for New Players

If you pull Vonreine early, level him immediately. He will be your tank for 4-star tournaments and a key offensive piece for difficult map stages. The Stoneskin will help him survive bosses that should technically one-shot him.

Advice for Veterans

You likely have better stats on your bench. However, keep one copy of Vonreine limit-broken specifically for 4-Star Bloody Battle tournaments. There are very few heroes who can apply a permanent mana steal in that mode. Do not waste Alpha Aethers on him unless you are chasing top 100 in tournaments weekly.

Community Corner: Hot Takes & History

When Vonreine launched, the community was initially skeptical about the mana steal mechanics, with some players reporting bugs where it didn't seem to work.

  • One user noted: "I found that he does steal a bit of mana... but it is so little that you barely notice."
  • However, others quickly realized his potential: "He’s like baby Ghealach except with Softskin... Brand new 4-star and useful one at that."
  • The comparison to the 5-star in the same portal was brutal: "I got this guy... I didn’t get the big red guy Vincent, but this guy was a welcome consolation. He is beautiful, he should have been the 5-star."

Final Thoughts

Vonreine is a classic example of a "mechanics over stats" hero. While 2026 has brought us 4-star heroes with 5-star stats, Vonreine's ability to summon a healing-absorbing, mana-stealing parasite protected by rock-hard skin ensures he avoids the retirement home. He is the annoying little gargoyle that could, and in Bloody Battle, he is the King.

Verdict: A permanent resident of your 4-star Tournament Roster. Keep him, emblem him, and watch your enemies struggle to charge a single skill.
