Xiaotu, The Lunar Avenger: Silencing Minions and Reversing Recovery

Overview

Xiaotu, the Lunar Protector Rabbit, hopped into Empires & Puzzles during the 2023 Lunar New Year event. As a Fire (Red) Legendary hero, she introduced a mechanic that fundamentally changed how we deal with summoner-heavy defenses: a passive ability that completely shuts down enemy minions. While she operates at Average speed, her ability to punish healing and neutralize minion effects makes her a unique tactical asset, even years after her release. She's not just a sniper; she's a silencer.

Xiaotu

Hero Art & Visuals

Xiaotu's design is a vibrant celebration of the Lunar New Year. Clad in festive red and gold traditional attire, she wields a weapon that looks like a fireworks launcher or a stylized staff. The artwork captures a blend of determination and festivityβ€”she's clearly a warrior, but the bunny ears and fluffy tail add a whimsical touch. The card border, featuring the intricate Lunar New Year motifs, remains one of the more distinct frames in the game. It's a design that says "celebration" but screams "I will destroy your minions."

Hero Stats

Xiaotu comes from the era of roughly ~860 Power. Let's look at her base stats compared to modern behemoths.

Costume Bonus data will be added soon.

Stat Analysis: By 2026 standards, Xiaotu's stats are undeniably outdated.

  • Attack (854): This was high in 2023 but is now eclipsed by modern hitters who routinely break 1300+ base attack (e.g., Jwala at 1324).
  • Defense (819) & Health (1497): These defensive stats are now perilously low. Modern tanks and even attackers boast 1300+ Defense and 2200+ Health. Xiaotu is fragile and requires careful protection (Limit Breaking +20 emblems) to survive a single hit from a modern sniper.

⚑ Tile Breakpoints Guide

12% Bonus

Skill Analysis: "Reverse Recovery" is a tactical nuke with a nasty side effect.

  • 655% Damage: This is a massive percentage. Even with her lower base attack, 655% hits hard. It allows her to threaten kills on softened targets.
  • Healing Reversal: This is her signature debuff. Targets don't just "resist" healing; they take 250 damage every time they try to heal. This turns enemies like Costume Mother North or HoT (Heal over Time) buffers into liabilities. If an enemy has a HoT active, they will take 250 damage at the start of every turn for 4 turns. That's up to 1000 extra damage, bypassing defense.

By the Numbers

  • Mana Speed Analysis: Average. She needs 10 tiles to charge. With a Level 23 Mana Troop (or Level 17 + costume/emblem bonuses if you can find them), you can drop this to 9 tiles. She is not fast, which hurts her viability in today's "Very Fast" meta, but her impact is worth the wait.
  • Damage Calculation: 655% of ~950 Attack (emblemed) is substantial. Against a modern hero with 1300 defense, she won't one-shot them from full health, but she will deal roughly 700-900 damage. Against older heroes or those with defense down, she hits for 1200+.
  • Healing/Support Calculation: The 250 damage on resisted healing is fixed. It ignores defense buffs. This is excellent for finishing off low-health targets who are desperately trying to heal.

Family Bonus, Passives, Aether Power & Unique Abilities

This section is where Xiaotu makes her case for staying on your roster.

Family Bonus

Monthly Event - Lunar Year
Family Bonus

Monthly Event - Lunar Year

  • Heroes become stronger when teamed with other unique Heroes of the same family.
  • The Lunar Year family features different Lunar Year Animal Heroes. Each Lunar Year Animal grants different bonus to the members of the Lunar Year family when paired with at least 1 other Lunar Year Hero.
  • This Hero gives the following Lunar Year (**) bonus to the members of the Lunar Year Family:
  • ** Rabbit: +5% mana generation
  • ** Ox: +10% defense
  • ** Tiger: +10% attack
  • ** Dragon: +15% critical chance
  • ** Snake: +5% healing
  • ** Rat: +15% Special Skill power
  • ** Horse: -5% Received damage reduction
  • The members of this family have additional perks in the Lunar New Year event.

Analysis: The Zodiac family bonus is unique. Xiaotu gives +5% Mana Generation to other Zodiac members (like Laohu) but not herself. You need two unique heroes to activate this. It's a nice perk if you run a themed team, but rarely a game-changer on its own.

Passives

Passive Icon
Inherent Abilities

Passive Skills

  • Stop Minions
Enemy Minions can't attack or use abilities.

Analysis:

  • Disable Minion Abilities: This is God-Tier. As long as Xiaotu is alive, enemy minions are just meat shields. They cannot attack. They cannot apply status effects (like Waterpipe's mana cut or Miriam & Midnight's healing). This single passive completely neutralizes the threat of many top-tier minion summoners. It is arguably one of the strongest counters in the game.

Aether Power

Attack Up
Aether Power

Attack Up

At the start of each battle, this Hero gets 20% attack for 6 turns

In battles with multiple waves, the effect is refreshed at the beginning of each wave.

Analysis: Attack Up. Simple, effective. It boosts her base attack at the start of the battle, helping her 655% sniper hit land with more authority. It's not as flashy as "Bulwark" or "Dodge," but it suits her role as a killer.

Legacy & Modern Relevance

  • Historical Context: Upon release, Xiaotu was a direct answer to the "Minion Meta" dominated by heroes like Waterpipe and Miriam & Midnight. She was a must-have for wars involving those tanks.
  • Power Creep Analysis: Statistically, she has fallen off a cliff. New 4-star heroes (like Construct Hotspin) have comparable or better survivability. However, her Passive has immune-to-power-creep properties. Disabling minion effects is binary: it works or it doesn't. And it still works perfectly.
  • Modern Viability Verdict: Situational Specialist. You don't bring Xiaotu for her stats; you bring her to shut down specific mechanics. If the enemy relies on minions for mana control or ailments, Xiaotu is still a VIP. In a vacuum, she is too squishy for top 100 defense, but on offense, she is a scalpel.

Emblem Path Analysis

Xiaotu is a Druid.

  • Path: Defense > Health > Attack
  • Pros: Her passive is her best asset. She needs to stay alive to keep minions silenced. Modern snipers will delete her if she stays at 819 Defense.
  • Cons: Sacrifices some of that sweet 655% damage potential.

The Glass Cannon

  • Path: Attack > Defense > Health
  • Pros: Maximizes her sniping potential. Useful if you can protect her with taunt heroes.
  • Cons: She will likely die before firing a second time.

Final Recommendation

For most players, the Survivor (Defense/Health) path is recommended. Her value comes from existing on the board to disable minions. If she dies, the enemy minions "wake up" and start hurting you. Keep the bunny alive.

Strengths

  • Minion Nullification: Completely neuters minion-based strategies (Waterpipe, Bera, Freya, M&M).
  • Healing Punishment: Turns enemy healers into team-killers. Excellent against Heal-over-Time.
  • High Damage Multiplier: 655% is still a formidable hit.
  • Druid Class: The Thorn minion gives her a tiny bit of extra survivability.

Weaknesses

  • Outdated Stats: Extremely fragile by 2025/2026 standards.
  • Average Speed: In a fast-paced meta, 10 tiles can feel like an eternity.
  • Single Target: She only hits one enemy (though the healing ailment affects nearby).
  • No Self-Sustain: Unlike her tiger counterpart Laohu, she doesn't heal herself or boost her own survivability actively.

Best Game Modes

  • Raids/War (Offense): Her primary home. Use her to counter specific minion tanks or heavy healer teams.
  • Bloody Battle: Paradoxically good. While the healing block is redundant (no healing allowed anyway), her Minion Silence is invaluable since minions are often used as "pseudo-healing" (meat shields) in Bloody Battle.
  • Events: Decent for boss killing due to high % damage, but generally too slow for competitive placing.

Advanced Strategy & Team Compositions

Sample Team Ideas

  • The Minion Exterminators:
    • Xiaotu + Grimble + Alucard. Xiaotu silences them, Grimble eats them for mana, Alucard destroys them. Total minion dominance.
  • The Anti-Heal Squad:
    • Xiaotu + Costume Perseus (or anyone with healing reduction). Stack anti-healing to ensure enemies never recover.
  • Red Stack:
    • Costume Marjana (EDD) + Xiaotu. C.Marjana drops Elemental Defense, and Xiaotu follows up for a near-guaranteed kill on Green enemies.

Counters & Anti-Synergies

  • Taunt Heroes: Xiaotu is a sniper. If Ludwig or Phorcys has Taunt up, she can't hit the priority target (healer/summoner).
  • Cleansers: Her healing ailment is uncleansable only if the hero description says so (it doesn't explicitly say "uncleansable" in the base text, so assume standard cleansers like Ariel can remove it). Correction: The ailment usually resists cleansing if it has specific text, but standard cleansers can wipe the "Block Healing" debuff unless specified otherwise. However, the damage triggers on attempted healing, so if they try to cleanse+heal in one go, order of operations matters.

Advice for New Players

If you pulled Xiaotu, congrats! She is a "problem solver." Don't use her as your main tank or defense hero. Keep her for when you face a team that spawns lots of annoying little minions. Max her out, but prioritize survivability emblems.

Advice for Veterans

You likely have her benched for newer, shinier toys with 1300 stats. However, don't dust her off just yet. Check your War matchups. If you see a Waterpipe tank in 2026, Xiaotu is still arguably the cleanest counter. Is she worth Alpha Aethers (LB2)? Probably not, unless you use her daily. Save those for modern stat-monsters. LB1 is sufficient for her niche utility.

Community Corner: Hot Takes & History

When released, the community went wild over her passive.

  • Hot Take: "I really hate the passive. It’s a lazy, in your face way to say β€˜look we solve the waterpipe problem'."
  • Sentiment: Players immediately recognized her as a hard counter to the "Minion Meta."
  • Fun Fact: Players debated if she was better than Laohu (the Tiger). While Laohu is faster, Xiaotu's healing punishment was often seen as the more devastating ailment for offense.

Final Thoughts

Xiaotu is a classic example of "Utility over Stats." In a game defined by power creep, her stats are ancient history. But her ability to tell enemy minions to "sit down and shut up" is timeless. She effectively removes an entire mechanic from the enemy team just by showing up. She might be a glass cannon now, but she's a glass cannon that silences the annoying noise of the battlefield.

Verdict: A permanent niche tool for your offensive war chest. Keep her fed, keep her safe, and let the rabbit hunt.
